Julie A Lindsey Guest Post

tinyNewbie Benefits

So, there’s this unwritten law in publishing that says you have to write in one genre. I imagine a big red and white sign outside literary agencies and publishing houses, nailed to the bricks: No Genre Jumping Allowed. Multi-genre authors will be ignored.

Now, if I was, say, I don’t know, someone BIG like Meg Cabot….then I could try my hand at another genre because I was big and big people do whatever the hell they want to. Hello, life. Well, I’m not big. I’m little. In fact, I have a fledgling baby-writing career and a natural inclination to thumb authority. So, I write the stories that come to mind. Because writing is still fun for me. It’s not my job. It’s my sometimes paying hobby. Plus, I have other problems like my wild mood swings and erratic thought train. I have no idea what my “correct” genre is. Where does my voice fit? No clue. I deeply admire the writers who grew up on Harlequin or Stephen King and simply *knew* one day they too would write books on those shelves. Good on ‘em! But it’s not me.

My brain doesn’t work like that.

I works like this… TILT.

I have to write what I write when it’s in my head or it’s gone. Sometimes my heroine is in high heels, sometimes in high school, sometimes both. Hey, I’m an equal opportunity fabricator. I figure, until one of my little-novels-that-could hit the big time, I have the advantage of doing whatever I want. There’s a window ahead of me, where I’ll be put in a box – the whichever genre sells best box– and I’ll have to hone and shape my ideas to go with the paycheck. BUT. Meanwhile, if I want to write about a shape shifting wererabbit in drag who solves crime by day and runs a brothel by night, I can. Hey, afterward I can write a picture book for kids (not about the rabbit). Maybe a how to book on messy living. Possibilities are limitless.

While I can indulge my whims, I plan to. And a perfect example of this is my April release: Reinventing Chloe. Last month was a sweet romance, Written on Her Heart. This month an angsty, kick ass teen. In the fall, a cozy mystery from Carina Press and a serial killer from Merit Press releases 10 days later….plus another sweet romance the following month. *shrugs* It’s how I do.

Here’s some more about my YA mystery…

Chloe_SMReinventing Chloe by Julie Anne Lindsey

When Chloe’s completely tragic life strands her in an East Coast nightmare, the smart, sassy Texas cheerleader sets her sights on solving a local murder. Sure, her new home has no Internet, her iPhone doesn’t get a signal and there’s no mall to be found, but Chloe’s navigating a new

school, new job and a confusing new romance. Her life’s officially tragic and she’s freezing her peep toe pumps off. She needs the distraction.

When her killer curiosity lands her in the cross hairs of a suspected murderer, things go from no fun to downright deadly. He’s determined to get Chloe off his case, but someone should’ve told him Chloe’s bully proof.

When Copper Suns Fall

YA Dark Urban Fantasy

By KaSonndra Leigh

In fifteen-year-old Chela Prizeon’s city, alchemy is forbidden, and angels hide among the mortal. With a deadly virus ravaging the globe, Chela’s nightmarish memories compels her to experience a past riddled with gloom, and now her brother is infected.

Chela’s only hope is the Caduceans, slayers sworn to protect the last seven Light Keepers and the ancient memories they share. A group led by the sometimes elusive, sometimes infuriating boy who intrigues Chela. But can she trust this boy with the mysterious past, someone who can influence her memories?

With the Caduceans aid, Chela races to defeat her rivals, to unearth dark family secrets, desperate to find a cure…only to discover the glutovirus is far more than a simple disease.

In this haunting debut, KaSonndra Leigh offers an escape into a world as intriguing as The Mortal Instruments and a story as chilling as Enclave. Full of celestial creatures, fascinating villainy, high-stake choices, and a secret romance, When Copper Suns Fall, is a fresh and original urban fantasy—with a dystopian twist—that will take readers on an unforgettable adventure.

An Excerpt from When Copper Suns Fall: a YA Dark Urban Fantasy

By KaSonndra Leigh

Forcing my eyes to open, I found myself outside the Cradlehack. I was standing in Faris’s arms, my head against his chest, my fingers entwined in his black vest. It was a smooth fabric that felt like silk. A cloth no one had worn outside of ceremonies since before the Tidal Years. This boy was no common citizen. His earthy-sweet smell made me feel hypnotically safe, as we stood among the crowd fleeing down the hillside. He lifted my chin, stared in my eyes. But this wasn’t some dumb player’s move.

No, a mysterious thing stirred behind his silvery-gray eyes.

“Feel better, Chela?” he asked. I nodded.

“Thanks for helping me,” I said, still fighting a light head. Still afraid the dreaded black blobs lingered somewhere around us. Somewhat ashamed I’d spoken so horribly to him moments ago.

“You probably shouldn’t do that,” he said.

“Do what?”

“Thank me.”

“Why? Because I caught you using alchemy? That’s what your kind does. Make magic in the shadows, right?” I said.

His left eye ticked. The girl in the hoodie had called him a Caducean. Could it be possible? Father told me Caduceans were a mythical group—demon slayers from a time long gone. Yet, here I stood with a boy who didn’t deny my claim.

Around us, fewer people were leaving the Shack. They paid no attention to the two idiots standing and staring at each other. Did Jalen and Lexa make it out safely?  They were taking forever to reach me.

Did I really want them to find me?

“They’ll call me, now, and make me a witness against you. I’m sorry, but I already have too many problems. So I—I have to tell the truth,” I said.

“That won’t be a problem.” Faris smiled, a catchy one that lit his face up. I couldn’t decide whether it was angelic or downright wicked. Just like I couldn’t remember where I’d ever heard an accent like his. What kind was it? Old southern? Old English? Irish? It sounded like a mix of all three, but with a deep timbre, making him sound god like. “In a few minutes, you won’t remember me or any of this.”

“Really? How do you figure that?” I asked, heart racing.

“Because my gift to you…” He moved his face closer to mine, pulling me into whatever was happening in his head. “My gift is to remove memories that cause you pain.”

“Okay, um, right.” Had I lost my mind? It probably wouldn’t have hurt to scream.

He held my gaze, locking me into something I couldn’t explain. A tear puckered up in his left eye, and slid down his cheek where it stopped on his top lip. Then he blinked, snapping us out of whatever place he’d taken us to, and glanced behind my head. “Here comes your dark knight,” he said, easing his arms away from me.

He strolled off into the last group of stragglers hanging around the Shack. How did he know my nickname for Jalen?

I wiped away a tear rolling down my right cheek.

“Chela, there you are. You scared me, girl.” Jalen’s voice cut into the moment. He spun me around to face him. I blinked, clearing my eyes. “What’s wrong? Did you get hurt?”

I glanced around us. The boy was gone. A dull headache joined the fuzziness in my head. Lost inside a clouded mind, I forgot what I wanted to say. The entire night’s events were hazy.

I fumbled with my thoughts.

What happened to me in there?

.

Talking with KsAonndra about her inspiration!

First I’d like to say thank you Nikki for allowing me this opportunity to visit your wonderful blog. Readers and bloggers have been so kind to me during this adventure. I can’t wait to share the story behind the music on my website, the heart of When Copper Suns Fall. I think every author has some kind of motivation technique when crafting a scene. For me, it’s about taking the essence of the novel as a whole when writing a scene. And to do that without losing sight of the story elements, I use music. Copper Suns is a cross-genre novel. It is pretty much a dark urban fantasy, but with heavy dystopian elements. So I listened to music that put me in the mood. Here’s a list of seven songs that very much influenced my writing process:

  1. Furious Angels by Rob Dougan

Faris’s Song – Kind of goes without saying. But the song is about a guy who loses his fiancée in a car accident. He makes a promise to her passing spirit that if she goes away, then his furious angels will find her and bring her back to him. Unfortunately, I can’t say too very much about what scene this was relevant to and why. But when you read the book, you’ll automatically know which one it relates to.

  1. Who Am I Living For? By Katy Perry

Chela’s Song- If you’ve heard Katy Perry’s heavy base and hard beats coupled with some pretty haunting lyrics, then you’ll understand why this is Chela’s song.

  1. Teardrop by Massive Attack

Chela’s song- One suggestion. Watch the video trailer and then listen to the song.

  1. Bring Me to Life by Evanescence

A song that always assisted me with focusing on the core being of my character Seth Alton. Listening to the words on this one tells you so much about him.

  1. My Immortal by Evanescence

Kind of goes without saying again. And I truly don’t want to ruin the story by talking too much about this one. So, I’ll let my readers listen to the song and place it with the right scene when reading.

  1. Uprising by Muse

An overall feel for the dystopian nature behind the book. This one covers the entire series as well.

  1. Paint the Sky with Stars by Enya

Okay. So there’s a romantic element in the story if you haven’t guessed by now. And this song is so pretty and light. There’s a scene in the book where you’ll be able to picture lying there and listening to this song in the background. Ahhh. LoL. All right, giving out too much information.

You can listen to all of these songs on my website. Two of them (Furious Angels and Teardrop) have been removed for some reason. But you can listen to them on Amazon and tons of other places. I do hope you enjoy reading the world I’ve created in When Copper Suns Fall. Once again, I’d like to thank Nikki for hosting me on her site today.

Character Interview with Seth Alton

Today we have the chance to interview Seth Alton, leader of the physical training group in Castle Hayne, Hill Burrough #1. Thank you, Seth, for taking a moment out of your valuable time to interview with us today.

Since you just turned eighteen, you were able to join a new class of citizens in Castle Hayne. How do you feel about your family, now that you’re an adult?

Seth: **chuckles before answering**

Family? What does that mean? Mine are all either missing, dead, or some combination of both. The Thoughtmaster’s are my family now.

Thoughtmasters? What are they?

Seth: **smirks** Who doesn’t know what a Thoughtmaster is? They’re the best of the five classes of gifted people that live in Castle Hayne. Masters of the meditative arts. Disciplinarians. We run a camp for bad kids. It’s called Minders Camp. My job is to make sure trainees can handle themselves once they step outside the Great Wall. You never know what ugly thing might get you out there. I also use techniques to…well, just say, I help them get their attitudes right so they can return home. Should I set a slot up for you? I could train you personally, if you like.

Er, no. I’m good. But thanks anyway. So, if you were granted three wishes, what would you ask for?

Seth: **crosses his legs, raises his left eyebrow, and stares at me a long moment** I don’t really want to answer that question right now. Next one, please.

Okay. How do you fall in love? At first sight? Over a long period?

Seth: I don’t fall in love. Love is a minefield of magnetic bombs waiting for you to swallow the iron pill. It pulls you in, and then boom! You’re dead. **uncrosses his legs and stares at me**

That’s kind of sad you feel that way. How do you decide if you can trust someone? First impressions? Intuition? Do you test the person somehow? Or are you just generally disposed to trust or not to trust?

Seth: I wonder if I didn’t make myself clear in the previous question. But I’ll humor you this one time. I trusted once, loved once. What did I get in the end? Betrayal. Heartache. Next question, please.

What really moves you, or touches you to the soul? And that’s not the same thing as the love question, by the way.

Seth: **chuckles and grins with his black-blue eyes** A double-edge sword kind of question. You get me to answer this one, and then you think you can figure out how I’d answer the little wishes question, right? One word, one thing touches my soul. It’s all that matters…power. I intend to have it. And I’ll get it anyway I have to.

When you walk into a room, what do you notice first? Second?

Seth: Well I’d notice you if you were sitting in there. You have such lovely brown eyes. I could swim in them until the silver moon rises on high next year.

Okay. Thanks, I think. On the other hand, when you walk into a room, what do you expect people to notice about you?

Seth: Well I don’t know, lovely. If walked into a room which one of my assets would you pay attention to first? **gives me a dimpled grin as I turn red** Are we almost done with these…incredibly fun questions? I have to get back to the Camp. New trainees are arriving shortly.

Of course. Just a couple more. What do you consider your special talent?

Seth: I make things happen that you wouldn’t believe. Even if you’d just seen it with your eyes all the way open.

What’s the worst thing you’ve ever done? Why?

Seth: Are you really prepared to hear me answer that question? Take my advice and skip it.

What are you most afraid of?

Seth: Easy enough. Nothing.

Surely you’d be afraid to lose someone you love. Your ideal mate, for example. Describe her to me.

Seth: **eyes cloud over and look through me a long moment** She is strong. Not just in body, but in spirit. She can stand me down. That’s not a easy thing to do, in case you haven’t heard. She can pull someone under her spell, or she can destroy them with a glance. And I don’t mean by using magic. I mean just because she is the one. **eyes refocus on me. I’m surprised he answered this one**

Describe yourself to me.

Seth: I am the alpha and the omega, the original and the doomed. The first of my kind and perhaps the last. Thank you for interviewing me.

Eden didn’t expect Az.

Not his saunter down the beach toward her. Not his unbelievable pick-up line. Not the instant, undeniable connection. And not his wings.

Yeah.

So long, happily-ever-after.

Now trapped between life and death, cursed to spread chaos with her every touch, Eden could be the key in the eternal struggle between heaven and hell. All because she gave her heart to one of the Fallen, an angel cast out of heaven.

She may lose everything she ever had. She may be betrayed by those she loves most. But Eden will not be a pawn in anyone else’s game. Her heart is her own.

And that’s only the beginning of the end.

Heaven and Hell. Angels and Demons. Good and Bad. Cut and dry right? Of course not. There is always that gray area. The one no one wants to talk about. Where the good guys try to stay in the light and the bad guys aren’t always completely evil. That’s where A Touch Mortal takes us, to the gray area. The area between good and bad where your soul hangs in the balance.

I must admit that I didn’t catch onto the characters names until nearly all the way through the book. The Biblical references were in front of my face and I never saw them. I blame it on the scattered brain lately. Once the names were actually spelled out for me the only issue I had was the fact that the name Az (Azazel) has been used EVERYWHERE. I mean seriously…every movie with a demon reference seems to have someone named Azazel. Where there no other fallen angels with cool names?

The storyline is a unique one. One that I personally hadn’t read before. Where a mortal with no path (destined to commit suicide) becomes a Sider after death. Explaining the book is difficult for me because I’m not sure I ever fully understood the schematics of the whole thing. What I got was this…a mortal dies, comes back as a breathing person that basically no on other than other Sider/angels/demons really notices. They store energy and then pass it on. However this energy isn’t good and so if they pass it to a mortal that is depressed or not stable, chances are they will kill themselves. These Siders are basically immortal, that is until Eden becomes one.

Eden is a girl with no path, destined to commit suicide and become a Sider. Until she meets Az. Az is an angel that has half fallen. He wants to go back to Heaven but on his own terms, not theirs. But those that are Fallen want him to join them. To try to get him to fall completely they torture and kill those girls that he has loved. In an attempt to keep Eden safe Az pretends to die so she will kill herself and become immortal. Things don’t work quite to plan though and Eden isn’t quite like other Siders in the past.

Gabriel is Az’s best friend. An angel. He’s also gay. Which I found intriguing. Gabriel cannot lie, though he can omit the truth which I also found amusing…skirting around the truth will only get you so far. Gabriel’s character is very protective of both Az and Eden and he is intrical to the plot of this book as well as the next installment (whenever that may be).

Clifford’s secondary characters come in an array of personality and alliances and really help move the story along. I enjoyed Kristen, the Sider with schizophrenia. Her character was equal parts amusing and disturbing.

This book is listed as a YA, though I wonder how hard of a time Clifford had getting it listed as such. There is way more cursing in this back then I have ever read in a YA before (didn’t bother me in the least, but you know…). There is also the story line revolving around suicide, which some may have a hard time with. So while it’s listed as a YA I would have to say that those reading it should be older YA..like 16-18. A Touch Mortal is one of those books that I will be thinking about for some time. I will mull it over and over in my brain trying to think of things I missed. For Leah Clifford’s first book, I am truly impressed. I can not wait for the next one…though I am betting it won’t be out till next year because I haven’t heard any buzz about it thus far.

I give A Touch Mortal by Leah Clifford 4.5 stars!

Haven Moore can’t control her visions of a past with a boy called Ethan, and a life in New York that ended in fiery tragedy. In our present, she designs beautiful dresses for her classmates with her best friend Beau. Dressmaking keeps her sane, since she lives with her widowed and heartbroken mother in her tyrannical grandmother’s house in Snope City, a tiny town in Tennessee. Then an impossible group of coincidences conspire to force her to flee to New York, to discover who she is, and who she was.

In New York, Haven meets Iain Morrow and is swept into an epic love affair that feels both deeply fated and terribly dangerous. Iain is suspected of murdering a rock star and Haven wonders, could he have murdered her in a past life? She visits the Ouroboros Society and discovers a murky world of reincarnation that stretches across millennia. Haven must discover the secrets hidden in her past lives, and loves¸ before all is lost and the cycle begins again.

This will be a short review as I DNF (did not finish) this book. I went into it really hoping I’d love it. I had heard mixed things and when that happens it’s usually a book I enjoy. The concept of reincarnation is a lovely one. Finding your soul mate life after life and being together. The idea that love never dies and no matter how many times you leave this earth, a piece of you remains to be reborn over and over.

That being said I found the story line a bit dull and at times hard to follow. There were entire sections of the book that I kept saying…please something happen…anything happen. It’s just way too drawn out for my tastes. The characters in the book didn’t connect to me at all. I felt bad for the female lead, Haven, for having to deal with her grandmother for so many years…but past that I didn’t feel anything at all. The male lead, Iain, was cute in a school boy type of way but I didn’t find myself thinking about him…which, for me, has to occur for me to get into a book.

I read up until Haven reaches New York and finally finds Iain, who is Ethan from her past life as Constance. They were killed in a fire so many years ago and Haven suspects that the men following her around have something to do with it. they flee to Rome. I personally suspect that this Adam guy that Iain is suspected of killing has something to do with it. Since Ethan was suspected of a murder of a famous doctor in thier past life. Confused yet? Yeah, me too. This was roughly at page 200 out of 411.

Also the cover bugged me. Not that the author had anything to do with the cover. And perhaps an explanation was made further into the book then what I read but the dragon is supposed to be an endless loop. The cover looks like a dragon eating a separate tail with no head. Odd. Again, perhaps this is explained later but I dunno…bugged me. Especially since in the parts of the book I read it’s described as the normal sign…one head, one tail, endless loop.

So I suspect that since the reviews I read varied, The Eternal Ones is a book you either get or you don’t. Sadly, I didn’t.

Across The Universe by Beth Revis

Available: NOW Amazon/Barnes and Noble/ Borders

Type: YA/Sci Fi

My Copy: Library book

A love out of time. A spaceship built of secrets and murder.

Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Across The Universe was a book that I simply did not want to put down once I started it. Which is a feat, let me tell you, because it’s YA and I don’t usually play nicely with YA. It takes a special kind of YA to hold my attention, and Ms Revis has definitely done that.

The book starts out in a basically modern-day setting with 17 yr old Amy and her parents about to be cryogenicly frozen and placed upon a spaceship for 300 years in route to a new planet. Amy is unimportant but her parents both have special skills that would be put into use once they are on this new planet. Something happens when Amy is frozen however and like some coma or surgery patients, she is semi awake and aware of her surroundings.

16 yr old Elder is the spaceships next leader. Taking over soon for Eldest who has had to lead for twice as long as normal because of a death in the ranks. Elder has blindly followed his leader until he stumbles upon an original blueprint from when the ship first started its voyage some 250 years ago. These blueprints show levels of the ship he never knew existed and so off he goes to investigate. He never expected to find people frozen on the secret level.

When Amy accidentally gets unthawed the pieces of the ships mystery start dropping into place. Lies are all that hold it together and with Amy and Elder uncovering the truth, everything is suddenly at stake.

I truly loved this book. From its dystopian nature to its romance flavor it hooked me from page one. The book had a creepy feel to it that made you think of mind control from the get-go. The way the people acted completely indifferent to anything other than their jobs. The really weird mating habits. The Hitler-esque feel of their leader, Eldest and his hatred for anything even remotely different then their monoethnic looks. Eldest was a character that I hated from his first appearance.

There is also the mystery of why Elder has never been told the truth about the ships origins, what happened to the leader that was supposed to take over before him, who has been unthawing the cryogenicly frozen people and what exactly happens on the fourth floor of the hospital where all the elderly residents disappear.

Of course the budding romance between Elder and his sunset-haired beauty Amy. A girl who is unlike any female he has ever known and one he has only seen in his dreams. She is everything that is right with her old world and he is everything that is right with his. He is strong-willed and willing to stand up to the only man he has ever had around for a father figure. Stand up for the rights of the people that he will one day serve. Amy is intelligent, gentle and her loyalty to her family is genuine.

It’s a world in a spaceship. A world with only a few thousand people who have never felt a breeze, never hiked through a forest, never been given the opportunity to be whatever they wanted to be. The sun isn’t what warms their day, but only a large light bulb in the ceiling. They are prisoners, trapped within metal walls. They turn blind eyes to what their hearts know to be the truth. Blindly following a leader that has no intention of ever telling them the truth.

The only thing I didn’t like was that after Amy get’s attacked during the ships “mating season” that Elder didn’t get more upset about the whole thing. Being that he wasn’t in his “season” and so he was thinking clearly. He got slightly ticked off that there was bruising on Amy but seriously? I wanted him to be PISSED…go kick the guys ass for trying to hurt her. But he seemed kind of indifferent about it. Which could go back to the nature of the ship…but still…

This is the first book from Ms Revis and I am very impressed! I can’t wait for the next book in this trilogy to come out..though I don’t think there is a release date set. Probably sometime next year. I will be eagerly awaiting it’s release that’s for sure!

Across The Universe is truly a unique take on the popular dystopian genre and is thought provoking as well. I would highly recommend this book!

I give Across the Universe by Beth Revis 4 stars!

Interview With Aspiring Author Lisa Teller!

Today for my Monday interview I wanted to introduce everyone to an aspiring author I have had the privilege to beta read for…Lisa Teller! Lisa and I got together months ago for me to read a YA book she had been working on, Wildwood Days, which is a romance set in the world of skateboarding. I was extremely impressed with her writing ability and hope to one day soon see her name on the cover of a book!

So, let’s give a warm welcome to Lisa…come in come in…let’s sit and talk a bit!

Let’s start with an easy one shall we? How long have you been writing?

I’ve written since childhood and enjoy writing poetry, short stories and children’s books as well as full- length novels. My poetry is accessible on the web, and some of my poetry is amongst the top 100 best poems on the web. One poem in particular “The Final Act” is extremely well-known. The poem, a short story written in verse was first published at www.netpoets.com. It was eventually picked up and published in the number one best seller, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul on Tough Stuff.

OOOOH I love those Chicken Soup books…when I was younger I think I read every one that was published at that point!

When did you start seriously pursuing publication?

That is an excellent question, but I have to laugh. I began seriously seeking publication of a novel after the release of “Twilight” and all the hype surrounding Stephanie Meyer. Here, is why: I’ve always loved to write but to make it a career required a degree. At least, that’s what I’d thought. I came from a modest upbringing where importance on education was minimal. To be honest, I quit school at sixteen to pursue a career in Cosmetology, but that’s another story. Although Stephanie Meyer’s has a Bachelors degree in English I connected with her. My motivation came from the fact she was just a regular housewife like me; a woman who wrote novels while juggling errands, caring for her children, cooking and cleaning the house. Something clicked; inspiring me. I dusted off an old manuscript and began feverishly revising and editing. Until that moment, I thought publishing a book to be an impossible dream.

Ha, well I must say, I think a LOT of people felt that way. I mean if she can do it…so can you right!? RIGHT!

Up to this point how many manuscripts have you written?

I’ve completed several short stories and children’s books. In addition, I’ve written the following Novels:
“Veil of Secrecy”- 85,000 words historical fiction set in Ireland during the 1970′s.
“Wildwood Days”- 81,000 words Young Adult contemporary set in New Jersey.
“New York Nights”- The Sequel to Wildwood Days is currently under development. I’ve completed the first 42,000 words.
“The Walk-In”- A young adult paranormal is in progress at www.textnovel.com/story/TheWalk-In/5399 .
I imagine and conjure up new novels on a daily basis.

Well I think Wildwood Days was AMAZING…and I’ve started reading The Walk In as well.

What are you working on currently?

I am currently working on my latest novel “The Walk-In.” I began writing the manuscript for a writing competition over at Textnovel.com. The genre is a young adult paranormal. I’m writing the story in the spirit of Thorne Smith’s (1926) numinous novel “Topper.” The tale begins when popular cheerleader Jackie Mark’s has a fatal collision with Lizzie Gordon, the creepy Goth girl from her third period English class. Discovering her guardian angel has made a dreadful mistake, Jackie learns her soul must depart from the afterlife. But with no physical body to dwell in, she makes an extraordinary decision. In a bizarre twist of fate, Jackie comes back from the hereafter as Lizzie Gordon, the school outcast. Further complicating matters, Jackie has no recollection of the change and Lizzie returns as a mischievous angel making Jackie’s new life anything but heavenly.

I will be posting an excerpt of The Walk In below for everyone to read…It really is a unique story!

Do you have representation right now?

Currently I do not have an agent, but I’m actively seeking the representation of a literary guru. Only those with patience, enthusiasm and a keen sense of humor need apply.

What has been your biggest struggle with the process?

My trouble comes from a lack of formal schooling. Any knowledge I’ve acquired in writing has been hands on and by the seat of my pants that goes for the querying process, as well. With no formal training or education, I’m armed only with a GED, my imagination, and the self help section at Barnes and Noble.  However, I do have a terrific mentor. My belief is people come successively into our lives for a reason, a purpose. Six years-ago, I met Marea. We crossed paths when my child needed a tutor. I later called her for help editing “Veil of Secrecy.” She’s has had a tremendous impact on my writing. She believes in my ability to write and has been a constant source of inspiration and encouragement.

That’s awesome you found someone to connect with that motivates you! I often think some aspiring authors feel this is a quick process when in truth it’s extremely slow. Without motivation I bet a lot of talented authors simply give up.

What advice would you give to other aspiring authors out there?

Rejection letters make satisfactory toilet paper, (hahaha) Just kidding! Seriously, this business is subjective to many people’s opinions and tastes. My advice is, believe in yourself and your writing. Never let anyone’s opinion be the bottom line. Never say Never! Nothing is impossible! Remove the word quit from your vocabulary! My advice to younger writers is, to stay in school. Get an education and follow your dreams, big or small.

Excerpt from “The Walk In” by Lisa Teller:

Chapter 1:- The Walk-In

On the morning of my untimely demise, I expected to be drawn up into a cloud surrounded by angels. I anticipated trumpets playing amazing grace and a vision of the pearly gates. But as it turns out the only thing I saw that morning was my body slumped over the steering wheel of my Ford Mustang. While my soul hovered overhead I struggled to make sense of it all. Eventually, I realized I wasn’t alone. Joining me was Lizzie Gordon the creepy Goth girl from my third period English class. As it turns out she was texting, ran the stop sign and hit me head on causing our fatal collision.

“Are we dead?” she asked.

That was the last thing I remembered before I found myself standing in a long line with a group of souls whose life had been cut way to short. I looked around for Lizzie but she wasn’t there.  After waiting most of the morning my ALA (Afterlife Advisor) approched me. She looked pretty average. Her red hair piled neatly atop her head was pulled into a bun and her bifocals teetered on her nose.

“Name,” She asked abruptly.

“Jackie, Jackie Marks, but everyone calls me Jax.”

“Well, Jax my name is Madge. I’m your ALA,” she said pointing to her name tag. “I’m here to answer any questions you may have before you’re recycled.”

“Recycled? What am I a soda can?”

“We’re not in the soft drink business. We recycle souls.”

“Souls?”

“Yes, it wasn’t your time to go therefore you’ll be recycled.”

“What exactly does that mean?” I asked taken aback.

“It means you’ll get to go back.”

“Phew!” So, I’m not dead, I’m just having a bad hair day and a near death experience?”

“Oh,You’re dead alright!”

“That sucks!” I said throwing myself back into the chair.

“ Don’t worry, I can fix the dead thing  . . . . But the hair isn’t an option.”

“If I’m dead, how do I go back?”

“That’s what I’m here for.Think of me as the real estate agent for your soul.”

“I’m not sure I follow. I thought when you die you go to either go up or down.”

“Technically your right, but every once in a while― as you can see,” she grinned, motioning to the line. “A guardian angel gets distracted and we have a slight mishap. Nobody’s perfect ya know ―except HIM,” she said pointing upwards.

“Basically you’re saying my guardian angel messed up and because of it I’m dead?”

“Pretty much. Now, it’s my job to find a body for your soul so you can complete your purpose.”

“My Purpose?”

“Yes, everyone has a purpose.”

“Really, what’s yours?”

“Look, little miss sassafrass my purpose is to find you a life!”

“Will I still be me?”

Madge ignored me. “I have a few options for you,” she said, searching her computer. “You can return as a newborn, in which case you can choose to be boy or girl and I can have you back on earth in a few days. This would be the easiest transition.”

“What are my other options?”

“Your other option would be to enter the body of a person whose soul has already moved on.”

“I’m not sure I understand.”

“The soul that has completed its purpose has the option to move on.Their physical body may or may not survive. Sometimes the soul leaves the physical body vacant. Leaving it open for another to take over. This transition is the  hardest because basically you become a walk in.”

“A walk-in?”

“Yes, you walk into their life, their memories, their friends, and their family. This option is always the most difficult.”

“So, either way I’ll no longer be Jackie Marks?”

“No, you won’t. By all intent and purposes Jackie Marks is deceased.”

“Why is it so complicated to walk-in if you have all their memories?”

“Because hard as we try to purge your physical memories as Jackie Mark’s the soul still has connections to people places back on earth.”

“So, who will I actually be, me or them?”

“Physically you will become the person you enter, but you’ll still have your same likes and dislikes. Family and friends usually notice the personality change, but they chalk it up to the traumatic incident that happened prior to the transformation.”

“I’m not going back as a baby!” I said exasperated. “Childhood was way too tough. Those years were just plain awkward.”

“Okay, then we need to find a girl about your age.”

“I want to go back to my home town ―my high school.”

Madge looked at me over the top of her glasses. “That’s not procedure.”

“What do you mean?”

“It’s easier to send you to a new place. A surrounding where you’ll transition better.”

“Why wouldn’t I transition best around things I know?”

“Too much déjà vu,” Madge said wrinkling her nose and furrowing her brow.

“Déjà who?”

“Déjà vu! It’s when things seem familiar like you’ve been there done that. Do you know what I mean?”

“I suppose, but . . .”

“To risky. You may remember you past life.”

“Sounds like you’ve done this before,” I said.

“Yes, I have and I swore I’d never do it again it’s just too uncertain. So, these are your choices,” she said, abruptly changing the subject. I sat quietly while Madge printed out my list of options.

1.      Sixteen- year- old Jennie Johnson, Florida.

2.      Seventeen-year-old Patty Olsen, California

3.      Seventeen- year-old Lizzie Gordon, New York

“It appears there are two choices open to you,” Madge said handing me the list.

I studied it carefully before declaring, “I don’t want to go to Florida or California.”

“You have to agree to the placement otherwise I can’t send you back.”

“What happens if I don’t agree?”

“You wait here until something comes up on the list that appeals to you.”

“You said I had two choices but there are three listings. Why is the third one blacked out?”

“It means it’s not a match for you!” Madge said snatching the list from my grasp.

“Why?” I asked pressuring her and I could tell she was nervous.

“It’s just too perilous!”

“Why? Is it someone I know, someone in my home town?” It was in that moment I remembered Lizzie. “Hey, what happened to the girl who hit my car?” Madge was uncomfortable. She began shuffling papers around on her desk and fidgeting restlessly. “I saw her hovering over the accident scene like me . . . Why isn’t she here.” I said looking over my shoulder.

“I’m not allowed to discuss that with you,” she said.

“Why, what happened to her?”

“She’s fulfilled her purpose,” Madge said leaning across her desk.

“Did she die too?” I could see the apprehension in her face. She was definitely hiding something from me.

“Until we find you a match you will be housed with the others . . .”

“Why are you being so evasive?” I shouted. “What happened to Lizzie?”

“I’m not allowed to say. I can only tell you she has moved on.”

“Is she the name that’s blacked out on your list? Did her soul move on and leave her body vacant? Is that why she’s not here?”

Madge was flustered, “Yes!” she blurted out.

“I want to go back as Lizzie Gordon!” I demanded. Upon saying those words Lizzie instantaneously appeared and was seated next to me. I took one look at her and began having second thoughts. How could I―Jackie Marks― high school cheerleader, homecoming queen and most popular girl at school go back as Lilly Munster? The thought was daunting to say the least.

“Jax, I’m so sorry,” Lizzie said. Madge just sat there shaking her head, realizing she was in the middle of an afterlife crisis

“How did I get here?” Lizzie asked annoyed. “It was so peaceful where I was. I want to go back.”

“Back where, to your life?” I asked.

“Get the pom-poms out of your ears! It was peaceful where I was. Why would I want to go back down there? That place was a living hell!”

“Trust me Lizzie Hell is much worse,” Madge said with undeniable knowledge.

“I happened to have liked my life.” I said.

“You would, you were pretty and popular.” Lizzie said rolling her eyes.

“Yes, I was, and you took all that away from me. What was so important that you ran the damned red light, Elvira?”

“I was texting my boyfriend.  .  . I already told you I’m sorry,” she said raising her voice.

Madge blew a whistle and began waving her arms for us to stop. “I told you both this was a bad idea. Now you can see I was right. So just agree you are not a good match!”

“I don’t understand,” I said. “How did Lizzie get here with me?”

“You summoned her!” Madge said chagrined.

“How?

“When you demanded to go back as her.”

“Why?” I asked confused.

“You can’t walk-in unless both souls are in agreement. So, when you stated your demand to become Lizzie Gordon― she appeared.”

“You want to go back as me?” Lizzie said aghast. “Not on your life!”

“I no longer have a life. You took mine from me.”

“Technically this was Celeste’s fault.” Madge said. “So don’t blame Lizzie.”

“Celeste?”

“Yes, your guardian angel she got distracted and well . . . she’s been reassigned.”

“I don’t care how I got here! I just want to go back to my life . . . or her life. It doesn’t matter I just want to get back!” I insisted.

“Well, it matters to me beauty queen,” Lizzie said. ”We have nothing in common!”

“Why should that matter?” I asked.

“I don’t want some dumb cheerleader taking over my body!”

“Why? Are you afraid I may make you popular and for once you might actually fit in? The way I figure it Lizzie, you owe me!”

Lizzie sat glowering at me and then addressed Madge. “Let’s say I agree to this, is it permanent?”

“What do you mean? You’re not seriously entertaining this idea are you? You agreed to move on. Your purpose has been fulfilled. If you let Jax walk- in essentially she will take over your life.”

“Isn’t there a trial period or anything?” Lizzie asked.

“We don’t like to that,” Madge said.

“Why,” Lizzie asked with sarcasm in her tone.

“Because she may like the life she’s walked into and you could decide you don’t want her to keep it. Can you see how this could be a problem? You must both be in agreement.”

That was the last thing I remember hearing.

When she breaks the most sacred tenet among her kind, she nearly pays with her life. Until a beautiful stranger saves her. A stranger who was sent to hunt those like her. Forced to flee into the mortal world with her family, Jacinda struggles to adapt to her new surroundings. The only bright light is Will. Gorgeous, elusive Will who stirs her inner draki to life. Although she is irresistibly drawn to him, Jacinda knows Will’s dark secret: He and his family are hunters. She should avoid him at all costs. But her inner draki is slowly slipping away—if it dies she will be left as a human forever. She’ll do anything to prevent that. Even if it means getting closer to her most dangerous enemy.

Mythical powers and breathtaking romance ignite in this story of a girl who defies all expectations and whose love crosses an ancient divide.

Jacinda’s life is mapped out for her. Even if she doesn’t agree with the direction. As the only fire-breathing Draki in her clan she is destined to be with the kings son, Cassian. Will has never seen a Draki up close and he is amazed. The being is so beautiful, so unique. Not bearing to hurt it he lets it go instead of capturing it as his hunter training demands.

At the threat of clipping her wings Jacinda’s mother whisks her and her twin sister Tamra who never fully became Draki away into the desert. The goal is to let Jacinda’s Draki wither from unuse regardless of what Jacinda herself wants. When she runs into Will at her new high school she feels alive, her Draki lives again within her. How far is she willing to go to save a part of herself? What is she willing to risk? Everything.

I got about 4 chapters into Firelight before I started regretting reading it so close to Nightshade by Andrea Cremer. The stories were just so similar to me and I think that because I had just finished Nightshade and loved it so much, that my judgment was clouded. I tried really hard to like Firelight, but I never fully committed to the characters. After the first few chapters I wanted something to happen….anything to happen. The book dragged massively for me.

Jacinda was a decently complex character but I found her to be slightly annoying. I wanted to tell her to suck it up and either deal with the move her mother had forced on her, or flee home with her intended mate. She thinks about going home all the time and yet when the opportunity is upon her and Cassian shows up, she balks again and again. I also wanted her to make up her mind about Will. It seemed like she was constantly arguing with herself over whether or not she wanted to be with him. I understand him being a hunter of her kind was dangerous for her but the sensation of being alive while near him hard to ignore. However I got tired of the back and forth quite quickly.

I don’t have much to say about Will. I’m at a loss for him. I liked his character all right but he failed to ever truly make me feel… He has a sucky family and I could totally understand how much he wanted to break free of them but feared them hunting him down as well and dragging him back. His cousins are just downright creepy.

Jacinda’s twin sister, Tamra,  totally rubbed me the wrong way. I kept thinking…wow what a bitch LOL. I got that she never transitioned and was merely human. I understood that she was jealous and lonely and all that. But it constantly felt like she LIKED shoving her sister down to the level she had been at. Different. An Outsider. The tables were turned in a town of humans. And I think Tamra liked it. Even with danger afoot she was still screeching at her sister. Blaming her for everything. Even after SAVING A LIFE. I only hope in the next book Tamra gets to take a long hard look at herself. And perhaps gets taken down a peg or two.

I loved the dragon aspect. I haven’t read many dragon books and so that was nice to experience. Sophie does a great job at descriptions. Especially that of the surrounding environment. I loved the flying sequences. The vividness of the colors she describes are breathtaking. The cover of Firelight is also magnificent.

I will still pick up the second book most likely when it comes out. I don’t believe there is a release date as of yet.I’m upset because I tried….really tried…. to love Firelight, sadly I just….didn’t.

I give Firelight by Sophie Jordan 2.75 stars!

Calla starts doubting her rules, her destiny. Research into her packs past reveals lies that have been told to everyone. Those in charge fear those lies being found out.

What is worth risking your life? Those lives of people around you. Love and the truth.

I am so glad I decided to venture back to the YA genre with this book. Nightshade was a book I’d heard a lot of buzz about. Something you either loved or you hated. I, for one, really enjoyed it once I got into it. I can’t even explain to you what jumped out at me. I’m at a loss on that. Nightshade kept me engrossed and coming back for more. The story line ran at a good pace and I wasn’t ever bored while reading it. Coming from someone that doesn’t read a lot of YA because it usually fails to keep me interested, I was really surprised by Nightshades ability to entertain me.

I really liked the interactions within Calla and Ren’s pack. At times they seemed so very human and then other times sounded very much like the wolves they embodied. Calla’s conflicting emotions between Ren and Shay were very well wrote. I was quite surprised at the level of sexuality that Andrea wove into the book. She really pushed the line as far as YA goes. However I found it to be a refreshing and honest look at the way in which teenagers feel, especially girls.  The new feelings, the want and need that pulls at a young woman when she starts falling in love.

Nightshade’s world building was really good as well. By the end of the book I was left wondering who was lying and who was telling the truth. The wraiths really reminded me of the Dementors from Harry Potter though. I did like the presence of other supernatural creatures like succbi. Even if they weren’t portrayed in quite the way I normally read about them. Feeding off mere emotion instead of sex.

At the heart of the novel is the old good versus evil story. Someone blinded by the lies and lead to believe they are doing right when in fact they are living as slaves. The story has been done a million times but I really enjoyed this foray into it. Andrea’s writing pulls you in and you keep reading, even if you’re not quite sure why. She is descriptive without being annoyingly so and her characters relationships are well-rounded and thought out.

The next book, Wolfsbane, comes out this summer. It will be a definite read for me!

I give Nightshade by Andrea Cremer 4.50 stars!
