Regan Hastings Interview

Today I’d like to welcome Regan Hastings to the blog! I recently read Visions of Magic and I absolutely adored it! Sultry, action packed, intricately plotted awesomeness through and through! If you love paranormal romance then this is a must read for you! Read my review of it HERE but first, let’s talk to Regan!

Hi Regan! *waves* welcome, welcome, come in and sit down! Let’s chat shall we? I’ve got questions I’ve been dying to throw your way ever since I finished drooling over the hero in your book. What?! Like everyone doesn’t already know I crave hardheaded males that will lay their lives on the line for me…geez :)

1. What made you decide to take on the additional name of Regan Hastings?

I invented Regan Hastings because dark paranormal was a brand new genre for me! My contemporary romances at Harlequin Desire are written under my own name and I’ve even done a few funny paranormals as Maureen Child. But dark was a different road and I wanted to make sure that my readers wouldn’t pick up VISIONS OF MAGIC and be upset, thinking that they were getting something else.

2. Tell us a bit about the world you have created for your “Awakening” novels?

In the Awakening, it’s contemporary times, but the world is really different from ours. Witchcraft is alive and well and the modern day version of the Salem witch trials is taking place. Women (both witch and human) are arrested and held without trial. Some are executed and some just disappear.

The whole world is having to come up with new laws and new enforcement departments to deal with magic and it’s not going well. Then there are the Awakened witches. Eight hundred and ten years ago, the last great coven cast a spell that went so desperately wrong that they sentenced themselves to reincarnate over and over again, living without magic, until the time of the Awakening. Then together with their Eternals immortal guardians, they would each have to face their past mistakes and fix what went wrong—or let the world end.

3. How many do you expect in this series?

It’s sort of open ended at the moment, but I’ve got ideas for six so far.

4. I fell in love with Torin (I have a tiny, ok big, alpha male complex), can we expect more stubborn, virile males in the coming books?

Oh boy, can you! LOL if you love Alphas, you’ve come to the right place. In the next book, VISIONS OF SKYFIRE, you’ll meet Teresa Santiago and her Eternal, Rune. A man who makes stubborn look like a virtue.

5. How long am I, err us, going to wait for the next installment? What else do you have coming out this year?

SKYFIRE will be out in October, just in time for Halloween!! Wahoo! And in addition to the VISIONS books, I have several Harlequin Desires coming out – and then I’m in a 2 in 1 novella collection with Maggie Shayne that comes out in July. (My story is an immortal Highlander and boy are those guys Alpha!)

6. If your personalities, Maureen and Regan, were to go out for a night on the town..where would they go?

That’s easy, LOL. They would go to a bar. Not one of those tragically trendy places with the blasting music out of sterile speakers and too many people dancing too weirdly, though. Regan and Maureen would go to an Irish pub. They’d drink too much, laugh too loudly and sing along to the Irish drinking songs. Maureen and Regan know the words to a LOT of Irish drinking songs!

7. How many novels have you had published up till now?

I’ve made 115 sales so far (including 9 novellas).
8. Is there a particular author/book that made you want to begin your own career? Who do you look up to?

There was no particular author or book that made me think—wow, I can do this. But the more I read, the more I needed to tell my own stories. I’ve been playing with words since I was a kid and still have the tablets filled with angsty teenage poetry to prove it!

As for which writer I most admire? Nora. She who needs no last name to those of us who love romance novels. No matter what genre she’s writing in, she makes the characters believable and the stories genuine. She’s a lovely woman who still works just as hard as she did in the beginning—how can you not be inspired?

9. What would you say to those writers who are currently trying to get published?

Read. Read whatever you can get your hands on. Read your favorites, read new genres. You’ll pick up so much just reading. You’ll learn the rhythm of structure, the beauty of well written dialogue and how to give information to the reader without turning it into an info dump.

And when you’re ready to write, join RWA. Find a critique group or partner. Ask them to be brutal. Slash and burn and then rebuild from the ashes. Never believe your words are perfect—everyone can be edited.

But most importantly, never give up. If this is your dream, work for it and don’t let anyone tell you that you can’t have it.

Thank you so much for coming by Regan! I really appreciate it! I can’t wait for the next book and its awesome to her I won;t have to wait a full year! You have an amazing career as your alter ego Maureen and I only see more success for you as Regan with your new line of Awakening books! Please come back and talk to us again anytime!

In the ten years since magic has reemerged in the world, witches have become feared and hunted. For weeks Shea Jameson has been haunted by visions of fire. When she unintentionally performs a spell in public, she becomes one of the hunted. Her only hope is Torin, a dangerously sensual man who claims to be her eternal mate.

Visions Of Magic is the first book in the “Awakening” series for Regan Hastings. I enjoyed this book a lot. It combined my love for the paranormal, mystery and hot men..which is always awesome for me to find when I pick up a book.

Shea is a woman who has been fighting her past for some time. She has denied the surges of witchcraft running through her body and tried to stop the inevitable. With hunters on the loose trying to destroy all witches, Shea just wants a normal life as a school teacher. But people are quick to point fingers and with Sheas family tree already containing those burned at the stake she is constantly on the run. When she is attacked and her magic leaks out, she is cornered by those that want to see her dead.

Torin has been watching his witch through incarnation after incarnation for centuries. He certainly isn’t going to stand around now while she is being cornered. Being the hero is something that has been ingrained in the soul that she alone can set on fire. Shea doesn’t want to trust this stranger that says he is her soul mate, but when he jailbreaks her she doesn’t have much of a choice.

The Awakening of the witches is upon them. They must find and contain an artifact hundreds of years old if they have any chance of saving this world they doomed so long ago.

This book had me from page one to the last sentence. It’s filled with pulse pounding action and a story line to keep you coming back for more. Torin is a smoking hot Eternal who only has eyes for Shea. Seriously, how romantic to wait centuries for your soul mate. Until the one lifetime when she remembers her past and touches you once more. *le sigh*.

The villain in the book leads me to believe there are more people involved then what we were shown in this book. This book is just a taste of the battle that will ensue I’m sure. However, a power hungry witch is never a good thing. Especially one so strong. I would have liked more on the President of The United States position. We are given a brief glimpse into the bigger picture, so I can only assume that will be delved into more fully in future books.

The underlying theme of difference really made the book for me. The human race is fickle and we tend to shy away from difference. What would you do if witches were real? Would you turn your neighbor in? Your best friend? Out of fear of the unknown? Or would you stand and fight for those you love? Books that make me think always win in the end.

I give Visions Of Magic by Regan Hastings 4 stars!
