The Chosen: a prophecy older than dirt and more dangerous than death. Even as they perfected steam-powered gadgetry and rounded up varmints from Hell, the Jackson brothers didn’t believe in it. But when the chips are down, three brothers named for weapons aren’t going out without a fight…

A Walk On The Wild Side

Attorney by day, demon-hunter by night, Remington Jackson is used to being on the sunny side of the law, even in the Wild West. But it’s showdown time, and Remy and his brothers are getting desperate. They don’t have the relic they need to slam the door shut on evil—so Remy is going to have to find and steal part of it.

Enter China McGee, shapeshifter, thief, beauty, and current prisoner. When Remy offers her freedom in exchange for a little light-fingered help, she’s pretty sure she’s going to end the association with a good old-fashioned seductive double cross. But there’s something about fighting through a jungle full of Mayan ruins that makes you want to settle down together. China could change. Remy might be special. But none of that matters if the devil takes them all…

.

Theresa Meyers is unlike any other author I’ve read recently. She seamlessly takes a paranormal romance with Indiana Jones tendencies and adds all kinds of steampunkness that I normally wouldn’t enjoy. In her stories it just works and I find myself taking the journey with the characters before I even realize that I am. Each of books in this series happen simultaneously, which is another oddity that works for Meyers. There are repetitive scenes as each of the three brothers come together, told in a different point of view in each book.

Shapeshifter China would rather do pretty much anything other then help a hunter do anything. Remington leaves her no choice when she learns he is after the same item she has been after for quite a long time. Remy thinks he knows everything there is to know about paranormal creatures aka Darkin. They’re all evil. China blows all his theories out of the water with her sultry looks, her wide range of emotions, and her ability to save his ass on occasion….and when she has nothing to gain from it to boot.

The Chosen sets an early tempo of fast paced adventure that takes China and Remy all over the world and eventually meeting up with his brothers and a crazy inventor in order to find and wield a very important book against a demon who is also China’s estranged father.

I liked this book, I did, but somewhere in the middle it got wordy and I found myself having a hard time staying focused. Things picked back up again about the time when all the brothers come back together and I came back on board with their journey. This third book is more paranormal then steampunk but it worked and the characters all played well off each other.

This is most definitely a trilogy you have to commit to and read in order. You simply will not get the subtle tie-ins if you don’t.  Each book is a lead up to The Chosen. I did think that because this was the finale that Remy and China got cheated out of a longer story like his two brothers…but it is what it is. Meyers is an author I would love to read again!

I give The Chosen by Theresa Meyers 3.75 stars!

Sacha Camomescro, an Empath demon with an airship, is rescuing refugees from Victorian Europe’s war on magic when she meets a man unlike any other. Javier Vargas is a lone alpha werewolf, his pack nearly decimated by assassins, his appetite for justice superseded only by his desire for her.

But Sacha’s gift is also her curse. While reading minds is helpful in eluding the assassins sent by Europe for Progress, it cripples her ability to trust men, and enjoy sex, for she can always see the fantasies men have when they’re with her. But Javier has a single-minded focus when it comes to his pursuit, and he wants her.

Just when it seems she can trust him, Sacha’s crew starts getting picked off mid-flight, and it seems there’s a rabid animal at fault. Javier and his lone remaining pack member fall under suspicion, and in the hysteria, Sacha begins to lose control of her mission. Blindsided by passion, she must decide if she can trust the one man who wants her just as she is.

I think I have a love/hate relationship with steampunk. No, wait, I take that back. I think I have a love/I don’t understand what’s going on relationship with steampunk. When I love it, I love it. Nothing more. Anything else leaves me confused and I wonder if it’s me, the book, the author….a combo of the two.

Airship Seduction wasn’t “not good”. In fact I liked it mostly. I liked the characters of Sacha and Javier (ok I tingle when I say Javier, I will admit it). I even loved the airship itself. It was more of a pirate ship then what I would typically think of when I think airship. More like Pirates Of The Caribbean instead.

I think where this one lost me a bit was the massive undertaking of story line. There is so much going on. An entire world is built, a few little side stories…it was a lot. It lost me quite quickly and I felt like I couldn’t wrap my mind around everything that was happening. This could have easily been two books in my mind. Because it was so daunting, I felt it lost a bit of its edge and while I wouldn’t say it dragged, I’d say I was overwhelmed. I wish there would have at least been a prequel to maybe break the readers into the world and the shadowy figures that exist there.

I did enjoy the steampunk-y gadgets that made an appearance. Especially the earpiece that Sacha wore to instantly translate languages into English. I want one of those! It certainly came in handy for the empath demon since she can also read people’s thoughts and since people tend to think in the language they speak in…would have made her job so trying to figure out the killer among them quite a bit harder.

Javier is a werewolf, the last of his clan after a massive attack took the lives of everyone else. He’s strong, deadly and completely loyal to those he loves. When he sets his sultry sights on Sacha nothing will stop him from possessing her.

So, I had a bit of an issue with the mounds of content, but I enjoyed the characters and the heart of the story line. I think lovers of steampunk will enjoy this one for its originality!

I give Airship Seduction by Camryn Rhys 3 stars!

Colt Jackson has gotten his name on many a wanted poster with success in the family business: hunting supernaturals across the frontier. Lately, though, there’s a sulphur stink in the wind and the Darkin population is exploding. A rift in the worlds is appearing. To close it, Colt will have to do the unthinkable and work with a demon to pass arcane boundaries no human alone can cross. Except when he summons his demon, he doesn’t get some horned monstrosity: he gets a curvy redheaded succubus named Lilly, who’s willing to make a bargain to become human again. He also gets Lilly’s secret expertise on the machinations on the dark side of the rift. And her charm and cleverness help to get them out of what his silver-loaded pistol and mechanical horse can’t. Of course, when all hell breaks loose, he might have to sacrifice his soul. But what’s adventure without a little risk?

.

If you follow my blog at all you know that when it comes to steampunk I usually just don’t “get it”. There isn’t many that I enjoy. I mean I understand the concept and all that, but in the grand scheme of things I just don’t have time to read them. So you’ll have to excuse me if I don’t fully understand everything about this book and base this review solely on what I liked. I did a bit of research into other people’s reviews and found that some people had a hard time calling this a steampunk….so again, I’m not really going to talk about all that. I enjoyed this book for the romance it was. It was an excellent start to a trilogy by giving me an interesting story line and enjoyable characters I could get behind.

Colt is a hard-headed, wild west loving, gun slinging outlaw from a family of demon hunters. He and his two brothers, Remington and Winchester, had been taught from an early age how to take out the evil in this world. Meaning he had very little childhood and as a result had become obsessed with carrying on the tradition his dad had taught them regardless of his other brothers actually having a life outside of their birthright.

Colt has been on a mission to find three parts of an ancient book that can shut down the opening of the gates to hell. He calls upon a demon to help him in his search out of necessity and finds himself face to face with a succubus with her own agenda. Lily  wants out of the lifestyle she doomed herself to years before in order to save her sister. Working with Colt will ensure that he helps her in her escape from their common foe, the demon Rathe. Colt has an awesome horse named Tempus. I use horse lightly because Tempus is completely steam-powered and 100% machine. Tempus and the airship had to be my favorite steampunk aspects in The Hunter by far. There are other gadgets, and the secondary character of the quirky inventor Marley that add to the steampunk genre quite well.

The book reads like Indiana Jones meets the wild west. It’s one adventure after another laced with an underlying sensuality that left me breathless. I loved Colt and Lily together. They completed each other. His rough and her silk, when woven together, created the perfect love…against all odds. I love the “from two worlds” aspect. I always have. I love when characters who know they shouldn’t be together triumph. It works in damn near every romance. It definitely works in The Hunter. I wish we would have been given a bit more closure to Lily’s search for her sister. I have hopes that it will be addressed before the end of the trilogy.

I give The Hunter by Theresa Meyers 4 stars!

Brothers Winchester, Remington, and Colt know the legends—they were trained from childhood to destroy demon predators, wielding the latest steam-powered gadgetry. It’s a devil of a job. But sometimes your fate chooses you…
Chasing Trouble

Winn Jackson isn’t interested in hunting nightmares across the Wild West—even if it’s the family business. Unlike his rakehell brothers, Winn believes in rules. As sheriff of Bodie, California, he only shoots actual law breakers. That’s what he’s doing when he rescues the Contessa Drossenburg, Alexandra Porter, a lady with all the elegance of the Old World—grace, beauty and class. And then he sees her fangs.

Alexandra isn’t just some bloodsucking damsel in distress, though. She’s on a mission to save her people—and she’s dead certain that Winn’s family legacy is the only way. Luckily, aside from grace and class, she also has a stubborn streak a mile wide. So like it or not, Winn is going to come back with her to the mountains of Transylvania, and while he’s at it, change his opinions about vampires, demon-hunting, and who exactly deserves shooting. And if she has her way, he’s going to do his darnedest to save the world…

.

After reading The Hunter I started this one right away not wanting to let the steampunky feel vanish from my memory. I knew right off the bat that this one wasn’t going to be anything like the last. First, I had issues with Winn. Completely not the fault of the author but I am not a mustache girl…at all. After seeing Winn on the cover and then reading about his fantastical stache that he twirls around his finger when he is anxious, I kept picturing Burt Reynolds. I am not a child of the 70′s and so Burt just ain’t my thang. I know, I know, staches in the wild west were popular. Whatever. There is a scene where he goes to shave and I really hoped he’d shave the thing off lol. No luck. So not finding the hero enticing was strike number one.

I wasn’t fond of Tessa at all. Not sure why. Possibly because she starts out the book being a total snob and then by the end talked and acted like any other character in the novel. If she was a snob I wanted her to retain that regality at least in part. I just wasn’t intrigued enough with her character to care about her reactions to Winn or her growing feelings for him. Strike two.

While The Slayer does continue the story arc of The Hunter I found Tessa and Winn to drag a lot. I wasn’t interested in their budding romance at all like I was with Colt and Lily. I found I wanted to skip ahead to find out when they finally got around to expressing their emotions and not hiding behind everything. Winn spends a lot of time feeling guilt for accidentally killing his mother when he was a boy. I get that, I do. However, you can’t let guilt get in the way of protecting the world. There were times I thought he wouldn’t be able to move past it for the greater good. There didn’t seem to be as much action either, though there was some. I found those action scenes to be what grabbed me the most. Theresa Meyers excels at the pulse pounding action by far.

The best part about The Slayer is that the story line is running parallel to The Hunter. So as everything is happening with Colt and Lily, at the same time it is happening with Winn and Tessa. So some of the scenes when everyone is together repeat themselves and we get it from another point of view. I liked that fresh take on things. I assume since Remington had also departed with the prickly shape-shifter China to parts unknown that their book will be on the same timeline.  It’s a unique way of viewing things and even though I didn’t get into Tessa and Winn as much, I appreciated their views. I also enjoy that it seems to be a recurring thing that in order to bring the pieces of the puzzle together, each brother will have to become a bit of a supernatural themselves, something they had sworn to hate until meeting the women.

I didn’t enjoy The Slayer nearly as much as The Hunter but I am really looking forward to Remington’s story. He seems more at ease then Colt and Winn and seeing him with the sarcastic China should be an adventure worth waiting for!

I give The Slayer by Theresa Meyers 3 stars!

Wicked As They Come by Delilah S Dawson (Blud #1)

Available: Now Amazon/B&N

Type: Parnormal Romance/ Steampunk

Publisher: Pocket

Have you ever heard of a Bludman? They’re rather like you and me—only more fabulous, immortal, and mostly indestructible. (They’re also very good kissers.)

Delilah S. Dawson’s darkly tempting debut drops her unsuspecting heroine into a strange faraway land for a romantic adventure that’s part paranormal, part steampunk . . . and completely irresistible.

When Tish Everett forces open the ruby locket she finds at an estate sale, she has no idea that a deliciously rakish Bludman has cast a spell just for her. She wakes up in a surreal world, where Criminy Stain, the dashing proprietor of a magical traveling circus, curiously awaits. At Criminy’s electric touch, Tish glimpses a tantalizing future, but she also foresees her ultimate doom. Before she can decide whether to risk her fate with the charming daredevil, the locket disappears, and with it, her only chance to return home. Tish and Criminy battle roaring sea monsters and thundering bludmares, vengeful ghosts and crooked Coppers in a treacherous race to recover the necklace from the evil Blud-hating Magistrate. But if they succeed, will Tish forsake her fanged suitor and return to her normal life, or will she take a chance on an unpredictable but dangerous destiny with the Bludman she’s coming to love?

.

Turning her life around after a bad breakup, Tish, has only been focusing on her career as a personal care nurse. Finding a locket in a deceased clients home and then stealing it is not her usual behavior but feeling driven by an unseen force all Tish knows is that she needs it and it is rightfully hers. When she awakens that night in Sang, naked and with a gorgeous man with fangs she thinks it’s one of the bets dreams she’s ever had.

Tish is about to learn this is no dreamland. Criminy Stain is as real as anyone and in this world there is a whole new set of rules to abide by. Blood hungry animals, a quirky circus act and evil Coppers around every turn. This world needs Tish just as much as Tish seems to need it.

.

Wow….just wow! I loved this book with some serious WHOA! It was so uniquely different while still incorporating some common lines in paranormal romance that I just couldn’t put it down!

Wicked As They Come is the story of the magically inclined ringmaster, Criminy Stain, and his quest to find the one person in all of time to be with him. That person is the average nurse, Tish, who spends her day taking care of the elderly until she stumbles upon a locket filled with blood that transports her when she dreams to a place that she insists isn’t real. A place that’s in the past but also in the future. A different reality. Filled with blood sucking bunnies, deer and men. The Bludmen are a type of vampire that had been rulers until they were hunted to near extinction and made to live in fear from an evil ruler and his Coppers (enforcers). A bit steampunk, a bit historical, but all engaging and awesome!

Tish goes from an average, scrub wearing nurse to a goth-like, circus fortune teller. In this world she is a glancer, someone who with just a touch of her hand to bare skin can see the future. Skin is a commodity in this world meant to not be seen. Pinkies, average humans, must keep covered up or the scent of their skin on the wind will attract every blood feeding thing for miles. The garb is very historical Victorian..all high necks and gloves. Her relationship with Criminy steadily grows from wonderment to undying love over the course of the book. The best aspect is that it’s based all on emotion and not on the physical. Don’t open this one expecting crazy steampunky circus sex. You’ll be disappointed. Criminy is part trickster, part alpha and all blood feeding man. His control with Tish is amazing because her blood sings to him on a level he’s never known. He is definitely not your typical, huge linebacker of a man hero. He is hard and soft molded into one seamlessly amazing man. He talks in riddles and rules with a stern look over his circus participants. Tish completes the side of him that no one ever sees. The gentle Criminy who just wanted someone who understood his inner workings.

The world building is spot on with all kinds of lush descriptions, interesting secondary characters and animals that might make you shudder. It’s a bleak world run on fear and ruled by a man with a hidden agenda. The Magistrate wants all the Bludmen gone. He bleeds them dry in a witch hunt type mentality under the disguise of fear. I felt like I got sucked in and lived in the world alongside of them. My poor overloaded brain even went as far as to put a face to Criminy in my mind in case a movie was ever made. I totally see this as a Tim Burton movie…dark and sinister with Johnny Depp playing the perfect Criminy. When I start picturing actors you know I’ve been overcome by a book. It doesn’t happen with even half the books I read. Can you tell I loved this book? Huh? HUH? CAN YOU?

I will say that, at times, for short periods, it did drag a bit. I thought the addition of the love triangle to be predictable and it makes me a bit sad when authors feel they have to go there to provide the necessary tension between characters. The main characters stand on their own. I don’t need the triangle.  I can only hope that in the next couple of books this person’s real agenda is revealed.

I’m just bummed that the next book doesn’t come out till next year. :( No fear though, Ms Dawson has a world inspired novella out this fall to help cushion the blow between books.

Wicked As They Come is an excellent read that will have you shaking your head at the awe-inspiring world created between the pages! Wonderfully written and beautifully detailed, this will rock your book loving world!

I give Wicked As They Come by Delilah S Dawson 4.50 stars!

Mile High Airship Club by Nishi Serrano

My Copy: Review

Newlywed Lady Rose’s curiosity is inflamed when a mysterious airship captain shows up extending an honorary invitation for she and her husband, Lord William, to join the Mile High Airship Club. A club she has never heard mention of in polite society. Rose is excited for the trip. It will be her first time aboard an airship. However, Rose is blissfully unaware of the trials she will endure to acquire a membership in this pleasure club!

Excerpt:

As they were escorted across the landing where they would soon board the Seduisante—an enormous feat of New Victoria’s engineering—Rose clutched her adoring husband’s arm. Curvilinear grids and stacks gleamed in the crisp fall sunshine. Ground crews swarmed, hoisted, and shouted while working on last preparations for the lucky flight of twenty-four guests eager to board.

“Did you know it takes near ninety citizens to crew this size of an airship?” William asked.

“I can imagine. Flying in the sky they look quite tiny, like a child’s toy. It must have taken thousands of master metallurgists to create such a complex and stunning sculpture. I wonder if the world will also seem a toy shining through the clouds from so very far above it,” Rose mused.

William laughed. “Yes, my love, and we shall make it our playground.” He continued chuckling to himself. Rose contemplated his faraway look. Was he secretly pondering over her naiveté? And what lessons would she discover once aboard? Make no mistake, Rose knew William loved her with all his heart, and he often said a healthy, lasting relationship began with the basic tenants of pleasure. Damn the stifling ethics of society! Behind closed doors Rose wanted to be his goddess in training.

Eleven other couples dressed in elegance and dripping jewels waited at the foot of the gangway as they were greeted by the Chief Pilot, Lieutenant, and to Rose’s secret discomfit, Captain Harland. She was extra surprised to see her tea-time friend Katrina and her husband ahead of her in the receiving line. Rose watched as the couple approached Captain Harland and was a bit jealous as his appraising eyes twinkled at Katrina, then he bowed and winked. Katrina giggled and whispered something in her husband’s ear as they passed the captain. Rose chided her brewing anger; she was acting like a strumpet.

Review:

Mile High Airship Club was my first venture into steampunk, and I must say I was left a bit flabbergasted. I wasn’t sure what to make of it. This was an erotic novella and so what I got was extremely short lived and with the exception of the weird sexual apparatuses, there wasn’t much to distinguish from a historical. I found those sexual apparatuses to be well thought out though and ingenious for the setting of the book. They were also just weird lol. No other way to say it really. Just odd. Pneumatic peni. I would guess anything from this particular type of story would be considering the central theme of steam powered and non battery operated things.

I enjoyed the storyline of Rose and her sexual awakening with her husband, William. At times it seemed almost cruel what they put the girl through but she sure enjoyed it after the first initial moments. The use of an airship was a great idea given the twist of the culture in steampunk. The twining of a historical feel with the steam powered elements was pretty cool and Nishi made it feel virtually seamless. I would have liked more to the story then just the sex, but since it was a novella I expected as much. It’s hard to incorporate everything into such a short amount of time.

Rose and William had somewhat of a weird relationship. They were married but William obviously thought she needed help in the sexual prowess department. The Mile High Airship Club is a unique and completely private organization that can help Rose in that such department. With the help of the extremely handsome Captain Harland, William is about to teach his wife all the secrets to being sexually open  in a steam powered airship in the sky.

I give Mile High Airship Club by Nishi Serrano 3 stars!
