Bordertown private investigator Luke Oliver’s beat is the dimensional fold in Manhattan between the human and supernatural realms. But now a secret from his past—the League of the Black Swan—has surfaced. Because Luke isn’t any ordinary P.I. He’s the Dark Wizard of Bordertown, and he never backs down from a fight.

But this time the fight threatens his life and his heart. Rio Jones, the only woman he loved, needs his help against a deadly menace. Luke pushed her away once before, so she’d never fall prey to the curse that threatens to destroy him. He swore he’d never let her go again. Luke and Rio, with the help of the newly reformed League, must keep evil forces from taking over Bordertown—all the while battling a passion on the razor’s edge between danger and desire. And going to take everything they have just to stay alive.

Bordertown is a place of about five square miles that is hidden under the streets of Manhattan, many non-humans live here but mostly Fae and Demons. The town is a lawless place since the last demon uprising when they ate the sheriff. The inhabitants of Bordertown want Luke to run for sheriff and frequently let him know in laugh out loud ways.

Luke Oliver (Lucian Olivieri) was born in 1500 to Lucrezia Borgia, and he has been paying the price of being related to this famous family for centuries. The curse that Luke lives with came from Lucrezia’s enemy, and states that if his actions ever veered from the path of goodness, he would be cast into darkness forever, he would survive with his soul only if he was all the Borgia’s were not.

Rio Jones, or Green, or whatever name she used is a bike messenger who would visit Luke’s place of business several times a week but they rarely talked to each other, especially after she asked him out one time for coffee and he shot her down. Luke felt the attraction between them but he always stayed away because of the curse.

Rio witnesses the kidnapping of a small child and knows she is in trouble because of what she read in the demon’s mind. There is only one person she can turn to, Luke who is a very powerful wizard. The little girl is named Elisabeth and is half Fae and the niece of Merelith, a very powerful Fae. Merelith knows about Rio’s past and comments on the fact that Rio’s twenty fifth birthday is soon. Come to find out, Merelith is not the only one interested in Rio’s birthday. As she is contacted several times by The League, a man named Chance Roberts and several other beings in Bordertown.

As Rio and Luke discover why everyone is so interested in her birthday she makes several decisions about what to do with who she is. And when her powers are revealed on her birthday she makes a deal with Maestro and the League to see if they can prevent her families from going to war against each other, bringing the rest of the world with them.

What a great start to a series that I will continue to read. I loved most everything about this book, the characters, the premise, the backdrop and even the villains who I am not sure are the bad guys. There were so many people and factions that were after Rio, not to destroy, but for who and what she would become on her birthday.

I love Rio, she is a smart, funny woman who just wants to live her life however others are preventing that as they want a part of her, and I thought that she and Luke were great together, the chemistry between them worked perfectly. There is an attraction from the beginning and although Luke especially tried to steer clear, the world works in mysterious ways and brought them together. And no one disliked Rio, it was hilarious how someone would be angry and the next thing you knew they were being very protective of her. Alice, a friend of Luke’s is a hoot and I will be interested if she plays an important role in the future, you could not help but smile when she came in the room. The banter between the characters is so much fun and even those that are sworn enemies tended to have hilarious moments. Oh and don’t forget Kit, Rio’s pet fox or “furface” as Luke called her, as she gets a lot of fun action and you do not want to get her mad. And talk about not wanting to get anyone mad, Luke seems to blow up anything that gets in his way when he is angry, only to offer to pay for it later – too funny.

I can see this book is a world builder and set-up to the series and yet I loved how well it worked, it introduces you to all the characters that I am hoping to see again. There is no real cliffhanger here either as the story has a clear ending yet you know there are things simmering under the surface that Luke and Rio will need to deal with soon.

I give The Cursed by Alyssa Day 4.5 stars!

Earthly Delights

With a messed up family background and a tendency to grow claws and fangs, Tanner Chance isn’t exactly the boy next door. But he’s a decent cop, and he keeps himself on the side of the good guys. Convenient, because when he rescues a survivor of a horrific shifter attack he finds himself instantly smitten—with an honest-to-goodness angel, as innocent as she is irresistible.

Marna may be angelic, but she’s not stupid or weak. She can take care of herself. Tanner is more temptation than protection anyway. Or so she thinks, until someone wearing her face starts taking out some of New Orleans’ more unsavory paranormals. With police and predators both gunning for her blood, Marna has no choice but to trust Tanner…even though what’s sparking between them is hotter than anything holy.

Avenging Angel is Eden’s fourth book in her The Fallen series and it picks up right after book three ends in an epic battle that leaves Marna wingless and earth bound. I enjoy this series immensely and am still waiting for the book that I won’t enjoy. Eden snags my interest every time she pens a story and luckily nothing changed when I picked up Avenging Angel.

Marna is quite capable of taking care of herself. Even if most of her angel powers have gone on the fritz after her wings were sawed off in a fight with a shifter. Regardless, Tanner has dogged her every step sine she was strong enough to walk away from him after she healed. Now two shifters have turned up dead and the only witness claims Marna did it. Or someone with Marna’s face. Not wanting her to be framed for murder Tanner whisks her away in order to protect her while they try and track down the real killer.

Marna is such a strong female lead character. She matches Tanner and even soars above him on occasion. Due to her run in with Tanner’s brother, she is skeptical of all shifters and doesn’t want to admit to herself the new found feelings shes having are mostly when he is present. The lust is new to her as are all human emotions and she tries valiantly to ignore them in her quest to get back up to Heaven in any way possible. But having Tanner around means Marna is slowly excepting her earthbound state and soon Heaven isn’t her top priority. I love watching (and experiencing) those new found feelings with the characters for the first time. The confusion, the slight anger, the denial are all something that I take along with the hero/heroine and in a world where we take things for granted, being able to feel that for the first time is an awesome experience. Working through them with a alpha panther shifter…even better.

Tanner and Marna together were a definite force to be reckoned with. Tanner’s panther was always close by and ready to attack and that frequently set Tanner on edge. He was always so afraid of losing control but he really just needed to learn to trust himself. His abusive background was constantly on his mind and he believed that any show of aggression made him just who he feared the most…his father.

Cynthia Eden is one of my favorite authors for a reason. She never fails to set the scene and make it believable. Everything is always spot on and the level of emotion she evokes in her characters and readers alike is astounding. Her men are always alpha and her females always rise to the occasion. I also love how her stories, though separate, take place in the same world her other books take place in. She mentions other characters from other series and it really just ties everything together so nicely. I’ve never been let down by a Cynthia Eden book and I always look forward to more from this amazing author!

I give Avenging Angel by Cynthia Eden 4.50 stars!

Series Feature: The Shadow Slayers by Cassi Carver & GIVEAWAY

Hi and thank you for having me as a guest today! Do you read a lot of book blogs and have you ever wondered what a typical day in the life of a full-time writer looks like? I do!

Alas, I know quite a few writers, and I’m not sure there is such a thing as a typical day. Sure, some writers are disciplined and some have word count goals. Some write by the seat of their pants and some plot the story points until every key twist and turn is perfectly mapped out. But each writer’s process is as unique as the writer herself.

I know what I want my days to look like. I’d like to wake up every morning and wave goodbye to my four teens as they slip out the door for school—early, of course, with their lunches packed and their perfect essays filed neatly in their backpacks. (Oh—and even better, my oldest son would drive them in the hand-me-down gold minivan I gave him, because heaven knows they wouldn’t all fit in my new two-seater sports car.)

And after the kids were at school, I’d feed my grateful pets then take a long bath that felt like an hour, but surprisingly only took fifteen minutes. I would emerge from said bath and let my hair air-dry to perfection while I ate breakfast and read the morning paper front to back. Oh, and I forgot to mention that I’d jogged five miles before the bath—but then, in this alternate reality, jogging is so easy that it’s easy to forget something like that.

Soon after breakfast, I would slip into my office (Because of course I have a designated office. An elegant one.), and then I’d start to write, adding two thousand words an hour to a manuscript that was sure to be an instant classic, stopping only to jump on Facebook or Twitter to answer fans’ questions about when the next release is due out or giving my stamp of approval to yet another child being named after one of my heroes or heroines.

At the end of that long (yet incredibly delightful) day, my husband would reward my hard work with a delicious home-cooked meal and nice thirty minute massage.

Wouldn’t that be AMAZING???

Well, that’s not exactly how my typical day goes. The kids are usually rushing out the door and I’m chasing them down the street with their forgotten lunch sack. The pets…actually, yes, the pets are super grateful. (I’ve never felt like such a rock-star for throwing down a bowl of kibble.) But the words don’t always surge from my brain onto the keyboard at an astonishing speed.

Still, it works for me. Regardless of what was happening around me—like orthodontic appointments, running kids to sporting events, and general familial chaos—when I wrote book 3 in The Shadow Slayers series, Dark Flight, it felt like everything was exactly how it should be.

Fans of the series have been through a lot with the characters, and I think they are really going to love this book. Writing it wasn’t a chore, but a pleasure. I was as teary-eyed at the end of the novel as I hope readers will be, and completing that Dark Flight taught me something…

I may not have the “perfect” writer’s life, but as long as I can finish books that speak to something deep inside me and I get the chance to share those books with readers—that’s perfectly all right with me.

As a thank you for stopping by, I’d like to give away a digital copy of Dark Flight to someone who comments today. Will you share with us one thing you’d have or do on your perfect day?

The criminal element doesn’t stand a chance once she hits San Diego’s dark streets. When two smoking-hot tenants move in next door, she thinks her love life might finally be heating up. Trouble is, she doesn’t seem to think she needs watching—unless they’re watching her shimmy out of her clothes. No matter how tempting her guardians, Kara’s not about to let anything stop her from tracking down a sadistic killer who carves into his victims and leaves them for dead. Shadow Rising by Cassi CarverBook 2: Shadow Rising

Publisher: Samhain

“Her lover is back from the dead but now there s hell to pay. “

When Kara Reed learns her bondmate, Julian, is truly dead, and that Gavin has seemingly skipped town, she figures things have hit rock bottom. But soon, a string of bizarre accidents has her doubting those closest to her. And to make matters worse, the demon-kings brand carved into her best friend Abbeys stomach is deteriorating by the day.

Then a powerful coven of witches issues Kara an ultimatum. Bring them the blood of a true fallen angel the only thing that will heal Abbey or die. Kara would do anything to help her friend. Problem is, the only fallen angel she s seen lately is the disoriented black-wing who attacked her scouts. One who looks suspiciously like Julian. Getting his blood might be easier if he was more interested in kissing her than killing her.

Caught between a coven of vengeful witches and a murderous dead lover, Kara must deliver the blood, heal the slow poison of Abbeys brand, and save Julian from being consumed by the Abyss. But to do this, she may need the help of the one man she swore never to trust again, Gavin.

Warning: This book contains an angry demon returning from the dead, a clan lord hiding a terrible secret, and a hunted heroine cracking open a can of whoop-ass. Watch out for creepy kitties, exploding bad guys, and some very sudsy shower sex.

The Silverwing's Sorceress by Cassi CarverBook 2.5: The Silverwing’s Sorceress

Available: Now Amazon/B&N

Publisher: Samhain

Abbey Sellers has to get out of town for a few days while trouble at home sorts itself out. A getaway to her family’s mountain retreat with her friend, Jaxon, is exactly what she needs to relax and forget the wound etched into her stomach. Except since the scorching kiss they shared, spending time with Jaxon isn’t as relaxing as it used to be.

Grounded warriors, secret tunnels, and an ancient Book of Death are only part of the problem. How does any woman with a pulse stay “just friends” with a man who spent a hundred years honing his lovemaking skills in a harem? Besides, he’s immortal, and she has a shelf life. Jaxon, though, isn’t listening—or taking no for an answer.

Jaxon Hex finally knows what he wants, and he won’t let anything stop him from making Abbey his. Not even the devastating secret he’s been hiding from her. With the coven out to assassinate the woman he loves, and Abbey dabbling in death magic that could get her killed, his own blood could be the one thing that heals her—or separates them for all eternity.

Product Warnings
This book contains a warrior with needs, a woman with willpower issues and a cabin that’s not what it seems. Watch out for no-holds-barred sex and a love that can move mountains…literally.

Dark Flight Banner 450 x 169

Dark Flight by Cassi CarverBook 3: Dark Flight

Available: May 21, 2013 Amazon/B&N

Publisher: Samhain

“In a world of shadows, a pure heart can be the most dangerous weapon of all. “

Kara has been training for months to help take down Brakken-the merciless black-wing who is making life hell for the Demiare. But when Julian discovers a scout has been tracking Kara, he wants her out of the fight-even if it means breaking her heart in the process.

Gavin isn’t much better. He’s already lost so much to Brakken and has no intention of allowing the woman he loves to be the next sacrifice. He and Julian have their hands full trying to fight Brakken’s army and keep Kara safe, especially after her recent visit to the mythical white-wings. Since her return, she’s been acting decidedly…strange.

With a terrible battle looming, Kara doesn’t have time to think about her conflicted feelings for Gavin and Julian-or the fact that she’s developed an unnatural taste for Gavin’s blood. But if she thought it was complicated evading mysterious scouts and fending off vicious black-wings, she’s learning that’s nothing compared to loving two strong-willed men.

Warning: This book contains angels that aren’t what they seem, a heroine with mad midwifery skills, and a metamorphosis that will change life as we knew it.

Kara dropped into a crouch behind the leaves of a giant bird of paradise as her claws silently pushed through the tips of her fingers. Her thigh muscles burned from the continued strain, but they could catch fire for all she cared. He wasn’t going to get her. Not this time.

When the sound of furtive footsteps approached, crunching softly through the thick, tropical undergrowth, Kara grabbed onto a low-lying branch and swung herself up, then quickly scaled the side of the tree. Her heart beat full-throttle, hammering so hard she hoped he couldn’t hear it. But if his hearing was that good, even the shallow breaths she took might give her away.

The buckskin-clad shape came closer. Head to toe, he wore a suit made of animal skin with a leaf pattern hand-drawn on the material. It was a hunting suit. But Kara didn’t feel like being hunted tonight.

She waited until he was directly under the tree where she hid. His chest and back were strapped with weapons that slowed him just enough to put him at a disadvantage. With a silent, decisive breath, Kara leapt.

Claws extended, she pounced on his back from above, flattening him to the ground under her, crushing a mass of fern fronds under his thick chest. She pulled a knife from his back strap and held it to his throat.

Smiling, she leaned down to whisper above his hooded ear, “Give up, big guy?” If it came out a little throaty and seductive, she couldn’t help it. Victory was a major turn-on. But then again, when it came to Gavin Cross, just breathing the same air was enough to get her hot and bothered.

He shifted under her, and his hulking body had no problem moving her with him. With her knees straddling his hips, she lifted up to allow him to roll onto his back.

“Lady Kara…” the man began, “you have need of me?”

Kara dropped the knife and jumped off, falling to one knee and clobbering a sprig of wild orchids in the clumsy maneuver. “Who the hell are you?”

“Patrick. You don’t remember me?” The warrior sat up and searched her eyes for a moment, but then his confusion cleared, as though he’d finally caught on to what was afoot. “Ah, you really don’t remember me, do you? You simply have need of a man. I don’t mind, my lady. I would be honored to service you.”

It still bothered Kara that his offer lit fuses all up and down her body. If she hadn’t grown up as a regular gal, she probably would have taken him up on his offer. Right here. Right now. Already, his substantial interest was growing.

She stood and brushed the debris from her black jeans. “I’m so sorry, Patrick. I really didn’t intend to…jump you. Lord Gavin and I are doing training exercises out here, and I thought you were him. You may want to hunt somewhere else until we’re finished.” When his brows rose, she added, “Finished training.”

Patrick stood, assessing her with a wry smile, then he retrieved his knife and returned it to its sheath. “Lord Gavin, you say? But he was the one who ordered the hunt.”

“He did what?” But just as she said it, something slammed into her from behind, carrying her blindingly fast through the maze of trees and vines until the blurred image of a clearing appeared.

In the next instant, she crashed into the tall grass face first and rolled onto her back—or was flipped, more like it. The hulking form above her blocked out the light of the moon with his massive silver wings. Her back pushed into the soggy soil, the moisture soaking through her shirt, and a root of some sort pressed against her ribs.

She glared up at Gavin, but with only an inch separating them, his hazel eyes were huge, eclipsing everything else in her vision, and his grin seemed to stretch as wide as his wings. “Gotcha.”

“What was that?” she demanded, but it was hard to yell at him with his lips so close to hers.

He brought a hand to her neck and ran his finger slowly across her throat. “If I had a knife, you’d be dead. I win again.”

Kara’s hands found his waist of their own volition. “No you don’t. You cheated. You sent a horny hunter into our training ground. I thought he was you!”

His breath was sweet and spicy, and the corners of his eyes crinkled with soft lines as he smiled. “Cheating is irrelevant when it comes to life and death, princess. Don’t expect integrity from those who want you dead.”

Her hands raked over the bare skin covering his ribs, until she curled her fingers into her palms to keep from touching him again. “Okay, that one doesn’t count.”

Gavin laughed and pulled her to her feet. “It counts. That’s three hundred sixteen for me and seven for you.”

“Shit,” she ground out. “Let’s try again.”

He reached out and adjusted her damp black T-shirt so that it lay smoothly against her chest. “You’re not ready, Kara.”

She batted his hand away. “So I can’t flash like a silver-wing. That doesn’t mean I’m defenseless.” She’d killed his brother, who was incredibly strong for a silver-winged fallen angel—but she didn’t think there would ever be a right moment to throw that in Gavin’s face. Besides, he’d just tell her that his brother hadn’t been an almost invincible black-wing like the beast they were planning to bring down now.

“We’ve done enough for one night. Let me take you home. It must be almost three pm in San Diego, and you said you had to work tonight.”

Now that Kara was officially part of the Mercury Clan—a band of more than three hundred fallen angel hybrids—Gavin had finally confided that Mercury Island was located in the Seychelles chain of islands. Albeit, with all the wards and defenses, there wasn’t a good chance of a fisherman or passing cruise ship catching on to that fact.

Being halfway around the world from San Diego, it was almost twelve hours off from where she called home. Three pm in San Diego meant she’d kept Gavin up all night here on Mercury Island.

“Yeah, I do have to work. And you need to get some rest.”

He wrapped his arms around her, preparing to flash. “Have you thought about my offer?” As he asked, they began to dissolve. He carried her through the inky tar, and a moment later, they were standing on the balcony off her living room overlooking downtown San Diego’s Gaslamp Quarter.

She let the nausea and the boneless feeling pass before she answered. “I can’t.”

He growled and released her. “No lady of the Mercury Clan needs to work. I have enough resources to keep you comfortable from now until the Armageddon. Did I ever mention that Teras’s daughter working at a bar for minimum wage and paltry tips is just plain absurd?”

“Only about a dozen times. Don’t you ever get tired of this subject, Daddy Warbucks? I know I do.”

“Your father was my king, Kara. How can I hold my head high when I’m not caring for his only daughter?”

Kara reached up—way up, given Gavin’s six-foot-seven-inch frame—and patted his cheek. The dark blond stubble along his jaw was just starting to poke through and it tickled her palm. “You’re so cute when you go all protect-and-provide on me, but I gotta get ready for work now. Bye.” When she wiggled her fingers in farewell and turned to enter the apartment, Gavin slapped her on the rump. She yelped and dashed into the living room.

“Brat!” he called after her, and then he flashed.

And with the sting his hand left on her ass, he was lucky he did.

She growled and swallowed down her body’s reaction to her golden-haired protector. Since her lover, Julian, had called things off three weeks ago, bringing Kara’s sex life to a screeching halt, her starving body couldn’t handle even grappling or sparring with Gavin without her wanting to unstrap his weapons belt to unsheathe his broadsword.

She sat hard on the edge of the sofa and ran a hand over the side of her throbbing backside. What if she did quit her job? What if she took her place on the island as a lady of the clan? What would it be like to trade her boots and jeans for island wear and an ever-present supply of men eager to do her bidding?

As it was, she wondered how long could she pine for Julian, hoping he’d reconsider—and not just for the sake of her broken, humiliated heart, but also for how effective his attention was at helping her control her raging libido.

Truth was, females of Kara’s kind didn’t do well with abstinence once they’d reached her age. Hell, they didn’t even attempt it. And now more than ever Kara could see why.

She began to pull off her boots, but her face was angled toward the balcony window, pointing towards Mercury Island however many thousands of miles away. “Celibacy sucks!” she shouted.

But unfortunately, rolling around with Gavin Cross in a totally different exercise couldn’t happen until they’d accomplished their primary objective—sending that black-wing bastard Brakken to the Abyss before he got hold of Gavin’s only child.

Dr. Joyce Yards has never met anyone as irresistible as 466. Their therapy sessions are growing hotter, his raw sexual hunger becoming aggressive, and he refuses to discuss anything except the possibility of getting her naked. Joy understands the dire consequences if she indulges her passion. It will break her heart but she must walk away.

Moon has been drugged, his memory shattered, and he’s now little more than feral, a dangerous threat to everyone. In their need for help, the NSO doctors turn to the only female Moon ever cared about—the one who left him behind two years ago.

Moon isn’t the same male Joy once knew. There are no rules now. If sex tames the wild beast and triggers his fractured memories, allowing him moments of lucidity, then Joy will give him everything, body and soul. She’ll do whatever it takes to save him—even at the cost of her own life.

Just what I need – another new author to add to my already overwhelming pile of books to read! I’ve heard good things about the New Species series so I jumped on the opportunity to read Moon (even though it totally goes against my OCD tendencies to begin a series with book number ten!!). The author has created a unique world in which the New Species were created in a lab by combining human and animal DNA. They were rescued from that lab after being subjected to experiments and torture, and an alliance with humans was formed in order to help them adjust to life in the outside world.

Part of that help comes in the form of therapy, where Joy meets Moon. She is a human psychologist hired to work with and counsel members of the New Species after their rescue. Moon is known as 466 to her then, strictly a subject needing her expertise but refusing to talk. Going against protocol, she arranges for all of his sessions to be strictly one on one with her, with no guard in the room. This helps him to begin to lower his guard with Joy. Since they spend so much time alone, it also allows him to blatantly pursue her sexually. He is raw, primitive and uninhibited and makes no excuses for wanting her. Joy finds herself growing closer to 466 emotionally and has difficulty fighting her sexual attraction to him. Knowing it would be unethical for her to act on that as his therapist, she feels her only option is to leave.

Fast forward two years when Joy is once again brought in to help the New Species. She has moved on professionally, taking a job at a hospital hours away from where she worked with 466. She never forgot the incredible male she fell for, though, and when she realizes that he is the one in trouble, she vows to do whatever it takes to help him. Moon has been drugged, making him lose touch with reality and even attack his fellow Species. When Joy comes face to face with him, she finds herself staring at a primal male in the throes of something no one knows how to handle. He is full of rage and aggression, but remarkably he responds to Joy.

What follows is a long, slow journey to get Moon back, healthy and sane. While the heads of the New Species work around the clock trying to determine what drugs Moon was given as well as finding the people responsible, Joy literally puts her life in Moon’s hands by locking herself in the basement cell where he is being held. She is determined to break through and heal him, willing to use whatever means necessary. On some deeper level, Moon recognizes Joy and responds to her. The fact that they once shared a bond helps to break through the barriers the unknown drugs are putting up in Moon’s mind.

When he loses control over and over, Joy reaches out to him using their physical connection, unashamedly acting on their sexual attraction as a way to bring him back. She aches for him and second-guesses leaving him two years ago, but she couldn’t see a way back then for their relationship to be anything but doomed. Now that he is back in her life and no longer her patient, not only is she willing to do whatever it takes to get Moon back to normal, she swears she will never leave him again.

I enjoyed delving into this new-to-me world of the New Species. Moon was an excellent hero (although he harped a little too much on Joy leaving him). He was sexy, aggressive and surprisingly sentimental. I loved that he recognized Joy on a deeper level, even when he was out of his mind. Joy was a good match for him. She almost came across as a stronger character, but I believe she needed to be in order to help him out of the dark place the drugs put him in. I don’t feel I missed much by starting this series in the middle, but I would definitely enjoy reading some of the previous New Species books.

I give Moon by Laurann Dohner 4 stars!

He has a close brotherhood with other warriors and will soon be working with them as he has received a new assignment from Divinity, The One. There are seven Seals that are being hosted in human bodies around the world and the first one is in danger of breaking, he must protect the Seal and the host. Each time a Seal is broken a new disaster will be unleashed until the final Apocalypse. Mira is the host of the first Seal and the one Kagan needs to protect.

Tolbert is the leader of a group of half breed’s or nephilim, they are also centuries old and the Scion warriors thought they had eradicated them years ago; unfortunately they just went underground and became more powerful. Argus is a demon working for this mysterious group of people and needs to get to Mira, so he takes over the body of a man that knows both Mira and Zoe; he was their case worker and their worst nightmare as he abused those in the system including Mira and Zoe. As Mira and Zoe are being held at Tolbert’s place in Colorado, the Scion warriors are on their way to rescue and destroy. They reach their destination and all hell breaks loose as they fight their way in to find Mira and Zoe. They must battle those that are about to start the end of the world, however also must protect the humans as even Lucifer has come to the party for the Seal.

This book had a lot going on, the introduction of many characters as well as world building as we discover who is who, we also learn what purpose each character has in the story, there are even those that we do not learn about until late. I had to read very carefully as there was so much information and several of the characters had side stories.

I liked all the Scion warriors; they were all very alpha men with a sexiness about them. They all had their little quirks; I loved how Wyrk was always hungry and thinking about his next meal while still being the computer genius he is. Kagan was a great hero who wanted to protect Mira even though he also wanted her, yet Xander would continually remind him about Rule #1 “do not f*ck the target”. The story premise was interesting, as the warriors are preventing the Apocalypse and they must protect those that Divinity has selected as human hosts, and I definitely see the series coming together with other Seal hosts needing protection.

I liked Mira; she was a woman that learned the hard way to not let anyone get the upper hand. She has learned to defend and protect herself from those that wish her harm. She was a great heroine however I wanted to shake her a few times as she was this strong and defiant woman at one time and then the next time she would just go along with Kagan like she wanted to be protected. The relationship between Divinity and Lucifer was interesting and the conversation they had where she reminds him of their “agreement” seems to be important and could be an interesting turn in future books.

I did notice that there were several times in the story when someone was missing, either one of the warriors or Mira or Zoe, they acted very worried yet did not go right out to look for them – they would go to get something to eat first or sit around and discuss what they needed to do. I wanted to say “go out and look for them, there are evil people trying to kill them.” But that aside, the story was exciting and I was eager to finish.

All in all a great start to a series that I would continue to read as I liked the secondary characters and I am interested in their stories enough to want to know who the other Seal hosts are and which Scion will protect them. I also liked Zoe and would like to see the relationship with Xander develop and what secrets will be revealed as they both are hiding things.

I give Seal of Destiny by Traci Douglass 3.75 stars!

This can’t be happening to her. A random break down…an isolated mountain road, a seemingly chance meeting with a hotter-than-hot stranger. Tatyana is a modern gal who can handle any crisis, but before she knows what’s hit her, she’s sensing a hideous threat, not to her but to this man who draws her like a moth to flame. Hunter.

“I know things…I saw it.” When the attack comes, she is his protection from a diabolical enemy, even as he initiates her into a startling world of magic, sorcery and sensuality. For in a moment of terrifying danger a spark has been struck, and neither can escape the erotic fire to come…

On a dark and stormy night Tatyana’s car breaks down and wouldn’t you know it, no cell service. She feels like she is in a horror movie as she decides what to do about getting help. She is on her way to her brother Dimitre’s house and now wishes she had told him she was coming as he would be looking for her. Tatyana and her brother are very close and ever since he met his new love Annali, she has not seen him as much; she understands that he is in love but she feels this need to see him again. As she walks, jumps and dances to keep warm she hopes she finds his place before she freezes to death.

Dimitre is a new witch at Willow Coven and as soon as he met Annali, he fell in love. He believes he has found a family at the Coven and has stayed away from his true family until he learns more about being a witch in the human world. He also is keeping a few secrets from Tatyana, something he has never done before.

Hunter has recently returned to the coven at the request of Ryce, the leader who is a very powerful witch, he has asked Hunter to return after ten years because they have had an attack against the coven that left the current sentential Gracie, injured. Hunter was the sentential for years however a tragedy sent him into exile by his own choosing to make some decisions. Coming back feels right and he is glad Ryce called him.

Tatyana literally falls through the front door which Hunter and Ryce open as they were leaving, and they quickly get her warm. She tells them through her shivers that she is looking for her brother and they immediately realize who she is and that she is a dormant witch. However before much else can happen, they are attacked and between Tatyana’s latent abilities and Hunter jump starting her powers they are able to beat back Braen, a powerful warlock that seems to be wrecking havoc on the coven. The dark warlock Braen is Hunter’s true brother, but one that Hunter wants nothing to do with. Hunter has six generations of evil to live down as he is the first white witch in centuries. Hunter’s help to turn Tatyana’s powers from dormant to full on brings a bond between them that will never go away, a guardian angel type of relationship, yet there bond is something more.

As the group deals with training new witches Dimitre and Tatyana, and making plans to destroy Braen’s coven there are dangers that even they cannot predict. They must deal with evil from both within as well as outside their coven.

I truly enjoy a paranormal book that involves kick-ass immortals, witches and bad guys that want to promote evil, this book has it all. I also love when there is a group that either live together or fight together, they have a bond that no one can break and they are brothers and sisters in every sense of the word. This group of men and women are good witches and they live together within the human world without their knowledge. They protect themselves against the evil witches and warlocks that want to kill and destroy anything good. Ryce is the leader and is a wonderful character as one of the most powerful white witches around. He keeps the group together and is happiest when they are all in the mansion living peacefully; he has even built a state of the art nursery for the future witches of the coven, which I think is very sweet for this large alpha male.

I thought that Hunter and Tatyana were great together, the chemistry was electric and even though their senses may have been heightened after they were bonded; there was an attraction there as soon as they met. There was not one member of the team that I did not like as they all had their separate personalities and I hope each get their own book as the series progresses.

I liked the premise of the book, a group of witches that are “good” and each witch has their own school of talent. No one is alike and each would contribute to the safety of the coven using their own skills. The pace of the story was fast and worked as it was action packed with something always going on until the conclusion. A couple of things I did not care for is that the ending fight between good and evil happened so fast, one time they were in the planning stages and then poof it was over. I think it needed something more in the end as there was a general lack of drama. Also, I was not sure about Tatyana’s family, and how she was going to explain away her absence from her job and the close knit family she talks about, it was just not well addressed. None the less, this is a great paranormal romance full of action and romance and I hope to see more from this series in the future.

I give Hunter by Jacquelyn Frank 4.0 stars!

Good or Great? Where Is The Line?

Are you an alpha girl? Do you prefer bookish men? Do you find yourself drooling over a great cover? A story line? A simple character? What makes you connect to a book? What takes that book to the next level of greatness for you? For me it’s a simple equation. The right amount of quirk, kink and action sets this reader a pantin and has me coming back for more every time. When the action is done right just, the men are total softie alphas and the heroine are capable females intent on getting what they want…..I’m in love. I swoon. I laugh. I cry. I get pissed. I become part of the journey. A sidelines player in the game the author has set forth. I admit I can be a fickle reader. What works in one book does not work in another. How the author sets the scene is key. If the scene is set to much, the author rambles and I get bored. If not enough is done then I’m confused and irritated. It’s a high wire balancing act with every book I open. At stake is my opinion, which is not worth all that much but every author I’ve met cares about what each individual persons opinion of their book is. They may learn not to respond to the negative opinions and it’s true you can’t please everyone. But they do care.

Lately though I’ve found something to be lacking. Sometimes a character just doesn’t sit well with me or I find myself bored while reading. Doesn’t mean the book wasn’t good it just means I never fully connected with the authors vision. In fact I “liked” the books….but I didn’t “love” them. There was nothing in it that had me running to my computer to tell anyone that would listen how much they NEEDED to read this book or even how much I hated it and loathed the ink it used to be printed (or storage it took up on my e-reader). So I’m left with a what do I do scenario. Do I try and fake it for an entire review? Rack my brain to come up with a review that I deem long enough? Or do I simply tell people that I liked it and if it’s in the genre they like too they might want to check it out.

Anthologies are hard to review. Simple as that. Most times there is at least one in an anthology that doesn’t click with a person. It’s very rare that I find myself loving every single story. As was the case with Predatory. The first half of this book was awesome. Let’s talk about that first. Alexandria Ivy and Nina Bangs were new to me authors. I had no idea what to expect from them and so I went into those with zero expectations. This is generally better for me as a reader/reviewer. Both Ivy and Bangs wove a quick paranormal romance tale that ensured that I would check out their work again. Both were engaging, well plotted out and had enough heat to have me entertained. Though in that respect Ivy clearly won out because the Bangs novella was lighter on the heat and heavier on the story line.  Duvall’s addition, while part of a series I have enjoyed in the past left me wanting more. I didn’t enjoy the characters and at one point she phonically spells out Richart’s name as Ree-shart. Does she not know what shart is? Does anyone but me know what that is? Well here’s a lesson for you…shart is when you fart and shit your pants. Sexy huh? Yeah didn’t think so. Just let me do what I do in every other book with a weirdly spelled name. Let me weeble-wobble between pronunciations in my head. Then to top it off it ended so incredibly abrupt I thought the publisher had left a chapter out. The last novella was by Hannah Jayne and it re-visits her Underworld Detection Agency series with Nina as the lead instead of a secondary character. I gave up on this series at book 3 and to to be honest I knew from the get go this one wasn’t going to work for me. What started out fun has quickly turned into a puddle of quicksand that I have no intention of getting sucked into. I only read the first 2 chapters of that one before giving up. I just don’t connect to her anymore.

Meeting Jett was like lightning. Dangerous. Better left untouched. And better forgotten. But lightning always strikes twice.

Brooke Stewart, a realtor in New York, doesn’t do relationships. When she’s sent to a remote estate to finalize a real estate deal, she discovers her new boss is no other than the guy she left naked in bed.

Sexy, dangerously handsome, and arrogant Jett Mayfield attracts trouble, and women, like a lightning rod. But the night he meets Brooke he gets more than he bargained for. The green-eyed millionaire playboy isn’t used to taking no for an answer, and he isn’t about to start now.

When he proposes two months of no strings sex, Brooke is intrigued and accepts his proposal. Little does she know Jett’s determined to claim the one woman he can’t have, pulling her deeper into his dangerous world.

A man who doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer.
A woman afraid to surrender to love.
Two lives that are about to cross…and secrets laid bare.

I so very badly wanted to read this book, love it immensely and sing it’s praises to everyone. I mean look at that cover! Holy hell almighty that’s a hot cover. The blurb is rockin. The heros name is JETT. That says it all right there. Smoking, hot, incredibly rich Jett. It’s an erotic romance, which I what I’ve been reading a lot of lately….and maybe that’s part of the problem. A year ago I think I would have read this and been all over it. But it’s getting harder and harder to impress me lately because I’ve read so much. Nothing seems original anymore. Reed does a good job with setting the scene but I never felt the heat between Jett and Brooke. It felt like they were going through the motions. Intense, hot, sexual motions…but motions none the less. While I liked Jett for all the reasons I already stated, I didn’t think she took him far enough. He needed to be more in control. More alpha. He needed more to his persona and more to the story line then just the sex.

Now don’t get me wrong. I “liked” this book. There are moments in it so perfect they made my heart hurt just a bit.  Jett is all mysterious at times and I played into it as much as Brooke did. The little side plot on Brookes heritage and how it plays into everything will be a source of my interest in how thing will play out in book two. Which I most definitely will read. I look forward to watching Brooke handle her new problems and what and who follows her to her new life.

Erotic romance fans that tend to like less story and more sex should enjoy this one. I enjoyed Reeds writing but I think this could have been better. Been more.

He pushes her sexual boundaries . . . From the moment waitress Karina meets him in a New York bar, she knows James is different. Daring. Dominating. Though he hides his true identity from her, the mysterious, wealthy businessman anticipates her every desire and fulfills her secret fantasies. Awakened by his touch, Karina discovers a wild side she hadn’t known existed and nothing is off limits. She aches for more . . . What begins as an erotic game soon escalates to a power play that blurs the line between pleasure and pain. Even as she capitulates to James’s sensual demands, Karina craves more. She wants his heart, his soul. She wants his love . . . and she’ll break all the rules to get it.

Slow Surrender had all the makings for something I would slobber over, but it never quite got there. From some of the questionably icky foreplay…i.e. vaginal stimulation by toe…to the complete over the topness of everything else. Butterfly clit stimulators being set off while trying to order pizza, a happy ending parlor woman using a glass dildo on the heroine while the hero skypes in and watches, then the realization that the hero is simply, too big to fit in which I immediately started singing:

When this book worked, it worked well but there was too much mystery surrounding the hero. Karina doesn’t even learn his name till the very end. It was just one orgasm to the next without actual penetration. Because of course he’s just too large and it takes him a week of different sized toys to “ready her”. There was no emotional depth to it at all. So while I enjoyed the marathon foreplay the story line lacked a plot that I could get behind. But I kept reading waiting for the next over the top scene to make me chuckle. Probably not what the author intended but I’m actually looking forward to book two to see where else the author can take this. Because really? Where do you go after vag stimulation by toe? *shudder*

All three of these books earned a 3.0 star rating from me. I like them and I will come back but I hope for more on the next go around. I want more emotion. More alpha. MORE PLOT. I want to go to my happy place when I read them only to emerge and feel saddened by the last words. I didn’t quite get there with these ones, but I have high hopes for the next ones.

What about you? What makes you pick up a book? Continue a series? Are you saddened when you decide to stop reading a series or author? Why?

A short novel of the Shifters Unbound series. Spike, a wildcat Shifter and the champion fighter of Shiftertown, is stunned when Myka, the best friend of a dying human woman, announces that Spike has fathered a cub. What’s more, the mother is giving the boy to Spike to protect and raise.

Myka, who’d been raised by an abusive stepfather, is not sure that a wild fighter named Spike is the best man to bring up the cute little jaguar cub. She goes to Shiftertown to check out Spike, and finds that the man behind the name is a lonely Shifter who’s lost most of his family and is a fierce caretaker to those he has left.

Spike is torn between the cub and his duties as tracker to the Shiftertown leader, and begs Myka, the only person who understands, to help him. He starts to like the sassy Myka, a horse trainer who’s not afraid of working with animals, even if they’re wildcats who turn into humans.

When Spike’s job puts his cub and Myka in danger, Spike is forced to choose between those to whom he’s pledged his loyalty and his need to protect the woman and cub he’s come to love.

The Shifters Unbound books are one of my favorite shifter series to date. Jennifer Ashley definitely knows how to write an engaging story that includes everything I want in shifter romances. In this short novel readers get to know more about Spike, the shifter who is always present but is scarily silent, preferring a threatening presence over threats.

When Spike finds out he has a son and the mother is dying he quickly swoops in to become a father. He takes to being a father fairly easily and wins over the trust of his cub quickly. Not so trusting is Myka, the best friend of the mother who passed. The tattoo’d badass shifter in front of her can’t possibly be a good father and she vows to keep en eye on him out of a promise she made to her friend to watch out for her son.

While these are shortened in length I never feel like I get cheated out of a good story with Jennifer Ashley. She somehow manages to make even the short ones feel longer and complete. Each novella offers readers a chance to reconnect with past characters and introduces more. I love reading about the hierarchy within the shiftertown and welcome any chance to read more, especially the original Austin shiftertown.

Spike and Myka together (love the names BTW) worked well and Ashley even treats readers to an action packed ending that really ties together books 3 and 4. The shifters in her books actually shift too which is nice. It bugs me when I’m reading paranormal romance with no actual paranormal. Though reluctant at first, Myka finally realizes that not only does she not have to worry about her friends son, but that she didn’t know all that much about shifters to begin with. I loved Spike and his larger then life attitude that had no trouble being humbled.

Hard Mated is an awesome addition to a series I’ve come to expect greatness from!

I give Hard Mated by Jennifer Ashley 4 stars!

Ellison Rowe, a Lupine Shifter, makes it his goal to protect Maria, once held captive by ferals, from male Shifters looking for mates. He likes Maria’s resilience and fire, but she’s been broken, and Ellison wants more than anything to heal her. When a new danger threatens Shiftertown’s cubs, Maria partners with Ellison to stop a cold-blooded criminal.

.

Ellison has been in several Shifter Unbound books and he’s finally getting his story told. He’s the goofy wolf shifter who is always quick with the witty comebacks. He’s become a staple in this series and he’s set his sights on Maria. A lovely beauty who is skittish from an abusive past at the hands of feral shifters. Ellison knows he has to go slow with her but other unmated shifters in shiftertown are making that next to impossible. Torn between wanting to go slow and his unbridled need to feel her beneath him Ellison vows to protect her against everything and everyone, even if that means putting a mate claim on her.

Maria was a great heroine because she made such huge strides in such a short time. She’s justifiably nervous around shifters but knows that Ellison especially would never hurt her.  Even knowing that she is still apprehensive of him but she can’t deny the pull she feels from him.

The way Ellison and Maria flirt was just so honest and sweet. There wasn’t anything hot and heavy going on and instead there was a warm pull that had them joined before they even knew what hit them. Ellison utilizes such restraint with Maria and is was nice to see Maria finally step up and take some action of her own towards the end.

When faced with the attempted abduction of town cubs Maria and Ellison join forces against a faceless enemy in order to protect what’s theirs. An awesome thing about shiftertown is that they pull together in times of need. The children might not be physically be theirs but that doesn’t mean they don’t feel the threat to them just as intensely.

I simply cannot wait for Tiger Magic which is out soon! Over the course of the last few books we’ve gotten a chance to know him a bit but I’m interested to see where Ashley takes the experiment that resulted in such a fearless, amazing man.

I give Lone Wolf by Jennifer Ashley 3.50 stars!

COVET CoverPassionate Couples; Complicated Connections

Some of the most memorable couples in books all have something in common – a hefty dose of passion along with a good amount of trials. And I think that combination is what makes the difference between a good read and a really great one. Think about it. If a couple has an easy time of it – either in coming together or staying together – then what’s the hook in the story?

And every couple, like every story, has to have its conflict. I’m not talking arguments (though those can add to the fireworks, too), but outside and internal influences that pull at the guy and the girl. What’s really difficult for a writer is finding new ways to play up old themes to grab a reader’s attention. If you throw divorce at me, I’ll immediately think of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. Give me misunderstood intentions and I’ll talk up Bet Me by Jennifer Crusie. Ask me about star-crossed, “can’t be any more in denial than they already are” lovers and I’ll bring up JR Ward’s Qhuinn and Blay.

These stories, and the stories about characters I truly come to care about, are messy. They may have a happy ending (or not). They will have a certain degree of angst. The stars will not always align, and if they do it will only happen after some, or a lot of, challenge. Some of it may be in good fun. Some of it will be bittersweet. And some of it will make you downright squirm in your chair.

Oh, I know all about the HEAs. But I prefer a read that takes what we experience and feel in life and throws twists into it. Something that feels real but that ramps up tension. That makes it into something more.

Yeah. That’s what gets me all jazzed about a book that I’d ultimately label as a great read.

In honor of couples and challenge, I’m going to share a short scene from my latest paranormal romantic suspense, Covet, right after protagonist David finds a photo of the love of his life kissing another man. A tease that shows how just when a character thinks his (or her) life is pretty good, things are about to change. Forever.

*~*~*~*~*~*~

A rustling magazine woke me up.

I felt like I’d run a full marathon and blamed jet lag and too many nights with too little sleep in Turkey for my exhaustion—though Lottie had done a solid job of finishing me off last night. If I could have spent another day doing nothing but sleeping I’d have done it, but the magazine rustled again and curiosity got the better of me. I rolled over, grunting through sore muscles and a foggy brain, and found Lottie propped up against a pillow, reading. Her hair hung loose, making her look like a raven-haired Rapunzel. Her black eyes were narrowed and focused, and her mouth moved every now and then when she read. I remembered the things that mouth did last night, felt all my blood rush south, then remembered the image of that mouth planted on another man.

“Something on your mind?” Lottie asked.

My gaze slid up, met hers, and held.

“You let out a really loud sigh,” she said in answer to my unasked question. After placing the magazine on the nightstand, she focused on me. “Sleep well?”

“Not enough.”

She ran fingers through my hair and studied me like she was looking for something deeper. Then she frowned and sank into her pillow so we were at eye level. “What’s wrong, David? Your mom was right last night. Something’s on your mind. I can tell.”

“Later.”

I didn’t want to spoil the morning after even though I’d already done enough damage. If I had my head on straight, I’d have hit Lottie up about the photo last night and not tumbled into bed with her. But I had my priorities at the time.

Lottie rolled on top and straddled me, misinterpreting my meaning. “I like later,” she said, pressing her warm lips against mine. A warm, woodsy scent that was distinctively hers and that always made me weak in the knees fired up my blood. “What do you want to do for our first day of vacation? Throw on some sweatshirts and go for a walk on the beach?” Her mouth worked over my chest. “Head up to that bed and breakfast we found in Massachusetts?” Her tongue made its way past my stomach and kept going. “Stay right where we are and see where this bed takes us?” She pushed the sheet from my thighs and moved in on her goal.

I grabbed her by the arm and stopped her.

Her head came up. “What’s wrong?”

The damned photo.

This is what happens when you let yourself slide into denial. You always pay the price for it later.

The Chosen: a prophecy older than dirt and more dangerous than death. Even as they perfected steam-powered gadgetry and rounded up varmints from Hell, the Jackson brothers didn’t believe in it. But when the chips are down, three brothers named for weapons aren’t going out without a fight…

A Walk On The Wild Side

Attorney by day, demon-hunter by night, Remington Jackson is used to being on the sunny side of the law, even in the Wild West. But it’s showdown time, and Remy and his brothers are getting desperate. They don’t have the relic they need to slam the door shut on evil—so Remy is going to have to find and steal part of it.

Enter China McGee, shapeshifter, thief, beauty, and current prisoner. When Remy offers her freedom in exchange for a little light-fingered help, she’s pretty sure she’s going to end the association with a good old-fashioned seductive double cross. But there’s something about fighting through a jungle full of Mayan ruins that makes you want to settle down together. China could change. Remy might be special. But none of that matters if the devil takes them all…

.

Theresa Meyers is unlike any other author I’ve read recently. She seamlessly takes a paranormal romance with Indiana Jones tendencies and adds all kinds of steampunkness that I normally wouldn’t enjoy. In her stories it just works and I find myself taking the journey with the characters before I even realize that I am. Each of books in this series happen simultaneously, which is another oddity that works for Meyers. There are repetitive scenes as each of the three brothers come together, told in a different point of view in each book.

Shapeshifter China would rather do pretty much anything other then help a hunter do anything. Remington leaves her no choice when she learns he is after the same item she has been after for quite a long time. Remy thinks he knows everything there is to know about paranormal creatures aka Darkin. They’re all evil. China blows all his theories out of the water with her sultry looks, her wide range of emotions, and her ability to save his ass on occasion….and when she has nothing to gain from it to boot.

The Chosen sets an early tempo of fast paced adventure that takes China and Remy all over the world and eventually meeting up with his brothers and a crazy inventor in order to find and wield a very important book against a demon who is also China’s estranged father.

I liked this book, I did, but somewhere in the middle it got wordy and I found myself having a hard time staying focused. Things picked back up again about the time when all the brothers come back together and I came back on board with their journey. This third book is more paranormal then steampunk but it worked and the characters all played well off each other.

This is most definitely a trilogy you have to commit to and read in order. You simply will not get the subtle tie-ins if you don’t.  Each book is a lead up to The Chosen. I did think that because this was the finale that Remy and China got cheated out of a longer story like his two brothers…but it is what it is. Meyers is an author I would love to read again!

I give The Chosen by Theresa Meyers 3.75 stars!
