Hi everyone, Kelly from Books-n-Kisses here. Nikki asked me to take over her blog for a little bit to help her celebrate her Blog-o-versary.
So HAPPY BLOG-O-VERSARY Nikki!!!
So since I have free rein of the blog and well since just a couple of days ago was the first day of summer. I thought I would talk about why I love summer.
Why is summer so great? Well really this is a silly questions, but here are my reasons. After you have read them all, tell me if you agree or not.
My top 5 reasons why summer is great because:
#1) I live in the Pacific Northwest and we get lots of rain. So when summer comes around we get SUN!!! And I do love the sun. Vitamin D is a good thing for this pasty white girl.
#2) One of my favorite things to do in the summer is to be on the water (hard to do when it is rainy and cold). So in the summer we spend as much time as possible on the boat, swimming, wakeboarding, and reading. YES, I take my kindle or book with me on the boat.
#3) BBQ… Do I need to say more?
#4) More daylight. Refer back to #1. Lots of rain means lots of cloud cover, which means it is gray here a lot.
#5) While it seems we are always on the go in the summer it is still very relaxing.
Since we are having a Blog-o-versary party I should give away a little something YES? Okay here we go.
I have for one lucky person I have a surprise prize pack. Oh there may be a book or two, maybe some swag, maybe a something else.
Please answer this questions: What is your favorite thing about summer?

less clothes… BWHAHAHA
I just love long evening walks in the beach. I love the bittersweet memories about my childhood that summer always brings, when I see kids running around with their grandparents. I love how the days seem to never end, the rich colours of twilight reflecting on the sea, the smell of sunkissed and sweaty skin. I love how summer makes you feel a little bit younger and a whole lot happier.

My fave thing about summer is I get to put the cactus out. Yep, that’s right. I live in MO and I have a cactus that my mom brought back from CA over 20 yrs ago. She broke it off from one of my Uncle’s cactus’ that was growing in his yard. The thing is now HUGE….about 6 ft tall…and went from one to three…the others about 4 and 5 ft tall…each about 18in round at the base and then get skinnier at the top. I’ve had to re-pot it twice. And now they are in a HUGE pot that sits on a base with wheels to make it easier to move it in and out each summer/fall. But the REALLY cool thing about this cactus is that it blooms at night. Big beautiful kinda creamy yellow flowers that smell delicious! They bloom at about anywhere between 10-midnight…then they close back up when the sun hits them hard…around 8:00 a.m. Then in a couple of days they turn black and fall off. So, the highlight of my summer is to…count the little nubs come up on the cactus that will eventually bloom into flowers….watch for them to bloom…catch them on camera (if I remember!)…then wait for the next round to bloom. We usually get about 20-25 flowers each summer…sometimes more/less depending on if we have a lot of strong thunderstorms ’cause the high winds will blow them right off. We put it out on the deck over Memorial weekend and soaked her down with water and then basically leave her alone. Right now there are no little nubbins…however, there are 6 smaller cactus’ in the pot along with the 3 huge ones that range in size from about 4 inches to 2 ft tall (there were 8 – I gave 2 away) that have grown in over the last few years…and thee of them and one of the old ones are showing about 1 – 2 inches of new growth. Right now we wheel it into a corner of our kitchen once the temp starts falling below 40…but I think It’s probably a good thing we have high ceilings in the living room…

I love going to the farmer’s markets, all the family barbecues. Just sitting around eating and laughing is the very best part of summer. We also escape for a week at Lake Tahoe which is relaxing and gives me a lot of glorious reading time.
